Today we’d like to introduce you to Mireya Hernandez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mireya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I always said I wanted to be a doctor because I love helping people but I wasn’t sure exactly what route I’d take. It wasn’t until my third year at Cal State Long Beach that I finally decided I wanted to be a chiropractor. At the time I was already a Kinesiology major but thought physical therapy was the path for me.
I ended up getting a job at a chiropractic office and that’s when I found my true calling. I loved everything about the profession and the doctor I was working with was so very passionate about chiropractic that I decided to look into it and see if it was for me. Indeed, it was because after college I enrolled in chiropractic school. While in school I worked part-time at 24 Hour Fitness and at a physical therapy office as an aquatic therapy assistant. Those two jobs taught me a lot about patient interaction and care.
It’s been nine years now since I began my career as a chiropractor and It’s been quite the roller coaster ride with more ups than downs but I wouldn’t change a single thing because it’s all lead me to where I am today. I am blessed to be a business owner and I love what I do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles have been personal. It took me a few years to get comfortable and confident with my skills as a chiropractor and to some extent that hindered the growth of my patient base. I was young when I graduated and started practicing and it was all new to me. I wasn’t exactly sure the type of practice I wanted to have so I spent years working for other doctors trying to figure it out, while at the same time building my patient base. I eventually decided to open up my own practice and unfortunately that didn’t work out for reasons beyond my control. It was a blessing in disguise because it brought me to the current location I’m at now and it’s here that I met my now business partner Julia Wu. We both shared the same vision of having a holistic healthcare clinic, so when the practice I was working for (which was next door to her acupuncture practice) went up for sale, we decided it was the perfect opportunity for us to buy it and merge in to one. It’s now been a little over a year and a half since we merged and became Simple Health Acupuncture and Chiropractic.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is walking to the library with my mom on Friday’s and checking out books. My mom worked in the strawberry fields which meant she was gone basically the whole day but since strawberries are seasonal, she wouldn’t work during the off season and that’s when we would walk to check out books. On our way home we’d stop by the local hot dog stand and eat. It’s the simple, little things that I remember and are very special to me.
