Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Mayes.
Miranda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had the creative bug. Whether it was making handmade gifts for others, going all out on party decorations, or anything in between, there was always some sort of side project I was working on in my free time. A little over a year ago, when my parents opened a retail store in Morro Bay, I started making wood signs to add to their inventory. I instantly fell in love with the process, the endless possibilities, the feeling of creating something on my own from scratch–all of it.
I decided I wanted to branch out and really make this a constant thing in my life…so was born Palette & Pine.
Has it been a smooth road?
Overall it has been a pretty smooth road. I’m so thankful to have the help of loved ones around me. My dad helped me a lot in the beginning–purchasing the wood, cutting it for me, getting me the tools I needed, etc. Once I decided to branch out into not just selling wood signs, but hosting DIY parties for sign making, my friends and family were so incredibly supportive. They all fell in love with the idea as much as I did, which really gave me the boost of confidence I needed to take this idea head-on. It’s still a work in progress trying to get my name out in the world, but having that confidence and truly believing in what I’m selling makes it feel like fun, rather than a job.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Palette & Pine story. Tell us more about the business.
Through Palette & Pine, I create handcrafted wood signs. The designs and sayings are endless and I encourage custom designs! Recently I branched out into DIY sign-making workshops. Think art bar paint parties, but with framed wood signs! Parties are hosted in the comfort of the host’s home or at their choice of venue (office, church, community center…the possibilities are endless). I handle all the prep work, setup, and cleanup, and the wood is cut, sanded, and assembled prior to each party. I supply all of the tools, paint, and stain needed so each guest can create a custom sign–guests simply show up ready to be creative! I walk guests through step-by-step how to stain, apply the stencil, paint, and make it their own so that they can go home with a personalized sign to be hung in their home or office.
I’m really passionate about the workshops. With paint parties being all the rage right now, I wanted to stand out and do something nobody in my area does yet while capitalizing on this creative train we’re all riding. Each party is so much fun and guests go home with something they are truly proud of and want to hang in their homes.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’m hopeful the world of creativity will never die down, and instead will only get bigger and more innovative. With that, I look forward to growing my business and possibly having my own studio one day where people can come to create something they’re proud of.
