Today we’d like to introduce you to Minhyung Eom.
Hi Minhyung, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m studying graphic design at ArtCenter College of Design, and I’m excited to share how I ended up here. I grew up in Korea and finished high school there.
When I had to decide what to do after high school, going to an Art school just felt right. I liked the idea that I wouldn’t have to deal with math anymore, and I actually enjoyed the creative side of things. Whenever I worked on design projects, I got into a zone where time flew by. As I got into it, I realized I loved bringing my ideas to life through design. Graphic design felt like a perfect fit since it matched my skills and interests.
Although I could have gone to an art school in Korea, I was curious about the United States. I thought it could be a place to learn more and meet people from different backgrounds. So, here I am at ArtCenter, learning and growing in the world of graphic design.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has had its ups and downs. On the positive side, I’ve been fortunate to have strong support from my parents, which made things relatively smooth. Their encouragement has been invaluable, and I’m truly grateful for it.
However, my experience at ArtCenter hasn’t been without its challenges. Adapting to the demanding workload was initially tough. The transition and adjustment phase was a bit of a struggle, as I had to find ways to manage the high volume of workload. Over time, though, I gradually developed the skills to navigate this challenge and overcome it.
Reflecting on my time at ArtCenter, it’s clear that the school has played a pivotal role in my growth within the design field. While it’s been rewarding, there were definitely moments that posed significant challenges. One of the more difficult aspects was grappling with feelings of inadequacy in comparison to my peers. The environment at ArtCenter can create a strong sense of peer pressure, with exceptionally talented students all around. Learning to cope with these emotions and resist the urge to constantly compare myself with others was a learning curve. It required developing emotional resilience and maintaining a focus on my personal journey.
In essence, the path hasn’t been entirely smooth, but the support of my parents and the lessons I’ve learned at ArtCenter have shaped my ability to handle challenges, grow as a designer, and build a healthier perspective on competition and self-worth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a keen interest in the field of Graphic Design, particularly with a focus on enhancing visual aesthetics and effective communication. My specialization lies in the strategic development of brand identities and the skillful integration of transmedia storytelling techniques.
An accomplishment that holds significant pride for me is the successful rebranding project for the “Santa Barbara Zoo.” This endeavor marked my inaugural venture into the realm of rebranding, allowing me to meticulously craft a revitalized visual identity and comprehensive set of brand guidelines that encapsulated the zoo’s essence.
Furthermore, a noteworthy achievement in my portfolio is the “24 Hours” transmedia project, executed during the course dedicated to transmedia storytelling. In this endeavor, I creatively suspended 18 circular installations from the ceiling, each projecting a condensed depiction of a day in my life spanning 24 hours. The seamless convergence of visual imagery and auditory elements within these suspended displays engendered a captivating multisensory experience, leaving an indelible impression on observers.
Beyond these projects, I derive great satisfaction from producing bespoke posters that reflect my personal interests. My design philosophy thrives on constant innovation, where I explore unconventional design methodologies and experiment with novel visual techniques. This commitment to continuous artistic exploration sets me apart, infusing a spirit of dynamism and ingenuity into my work.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
As I’m about to dive into the real world of graphic design, there are two big things that really matter to me. First off, it’s all about keeping the learning spirit alive. The design field keeps changing, and I want to be on top of those changes. Learning should never stop – it’s how I can stay fresh and bring the coolest ideas to the table.
And then, it’s connecting with other designers. I’m all about making real friendships with people who share the same design vibe. It’s not just about work; it’s about swapping stories, getting inspired, and maybe even teaming up on cool projects. These connections make the design world feel like a close-knit community, and that’s something I truly value.
