Today we’d like to introduce you to Mina Mauldin.
Mina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I wrote my first song at the age of eight called “When the Night Falls” with a full-on pop melody. As far back as I can remember, I was singing and dancing. Freedom of expression was really encouraged in my family. My mother was a dance teacher, so at age three I was in ballet, tap and gymnastics which grew to be my love and passion. I briefly trained in Houston with Bela Karolyi, Olympic gymnastics coach, but that life took me away from my friends and family. I chose a ‘normal’ childhood which I danced and sang through in a small town in Texas. My parents ingrained in me a strong sense of discipline and integrity for which I’m grateful. I also thrive on challenging myself, using my passions to propel me forward.
After my father passed away, I channeled my love for music into music and art. I was inspired by loss and love and change. I’ve written songs about my grandparent’s home being demolished in a hurricane to skydiving adventures with an 80-year old friend as one of his last b-day wishes to just plain having fun. Drawing from rich experiences, art and music have really saved me from depression and darkness. Over time, I’ve been in bands and released albums which have led to indie label deals and syncs. It’s been a free-spirited ride so far.
My newest project, Immortal Music Mafia or IMMA, is my new baby to be ‘hatched’ in 2020. The album is called “Tears of a Tiger” inspired by numerous relationships with narcissists, I discovered my emphatic nature and use of heartache as fuel for my art. It’s provided a great sense of understanding of others’ suffering as well as empowering my story in many ways.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I feel grateful for challenges as they provide the opportunity to grow. One of my motto is “you can have anything you want, as long as you’ve got imagination.” Using your mind to create possibilities is a very powerful tool.
What else should we know about you and IMMA?
I largely consider myself an artist. I enjoy songwriting and production to incorporation of dance with a very hands-on approach, I enjoy the creative process.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Good question, I think all lessons are worth learning. If I could tell my younger self one nugget of wisdom, it would be “don’t doubt yourself and to dare to fail gloriously”.
