Mimi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I didn’t grow up with any sisters. Because of this, there has always existed deep down inside of me an overwhelming desire to unite and empower young girls and women. To build a tribe. Especially black women. I knew the moment I first saw them that waist beads were a gift. After spending much time getting to know them, researching their meaning and history, I set out to develop the craft and make it my own. Today, I have made over 500 waistbands and I have personally adorned over 200 women. Women around the world are choosing Turquoise + Salt to adorn themselves. This is a dream come true.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely not been smooth. I faced the usual suspects of obstacles. Lack of finances, loss of friendships, increased stress and decreased free time. The major struggle has been keeping up with demand.

Turquoise + Salt provides a tool that reminds women to recognize their inner and outer beauty. We teach them to give themselves permission to be in love with themselves at this very exact moment. We encourage women to explore their power and stop telling ourselves self-deprecating stories that are not our truth. Turquoise and salt are not just about aesthetics. We are adornment. We are powerful. Intentional, mindful, and purposeful.
I am proud to know that we are changing minds and lives of women by empowering them and showing the ways of loving on themselves.

I believe giving love selflessly, being humble and graceful in all situations, and not being so critical of myself are major qualities.
