Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle and Dirk Uys.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our family came to the USA, the land of opportunity, in 2003. We wanted to live in a safe neighborhood and provide our kids with opportunities. Due to a work opportunity, we ended up in Temecula, CA and decided to stay. In 2009, we bought 3 acres in Temecula Wine Country and decided to plant a one-acre vineyard first, before doing landscaping around the house. In 2012 we made our first 18 bottles of wine and kept working on improving our craft. After winning several accolades with our wines, we decided to start sharing our experience of growing and making wine by offering an Airbnb Experience tour called “Discover off the Beaten Track Winery”
Two girlfriends visiting Temecula booked a tour with us and showed up a little late and out of breath. They explained they rented bicycles for the weekend to tour Temecula Wine Country but was not expecting the hills in the area to be so challenging! We shared a great time with them and afterwards Dirk suggested they may have had an easier time if they were using electric bikes. We were just introduced to e-bikes ourselves the week prior by our friends. That is where the idea was born to rent out e-bikes to make it easy for everyone to have an outdoor experience and explore Temecula and surrounding area at their own pace. e-Bikes are a great equalizer because any age and even the not so fit and those with injuries can ride and keep up with the group!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a relatively smooth ride but very time consuming. We both have full time jobs and spent a lot of time researching which e-bikes to buy and setting up the website. Our goal was to make it easy to complete the order and payment online to enable customers to make a reservation when it is convenient for them, even if outside of business hours. Covid-19 caused delays with registration of the business and availability of e-bikes. We had to be patient with the process. It all paid off and we just love meeting all our customers and hearing their stories.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Temecula Wine Country e-Bike Rentals story. Tell us more about the business.
We rent out e-bikes from our location in Wine Country, Temecula with a focus on delivering to your doorstep and pick-up when you’re done. For delivery and pick-up there is no charge to your hotel, AirBnB or preferred place of stay in Temecula! We are within a mile from the nearest winery which also makes it convenient to pick up and explore from our location. We strive to make the pickup and drop off as seamless as possible. We operate out of our barn which was once a horse stable and has now been converted into a wine cellar and e-bike storage facility.
Every rider is provided with QR codes with operating instructions as well as curated routes in Wine Country and suggestions of where you can ride depending on your interest. As residents of Wine Country and wine lovers, we have in-depth knowledge of the wineries and the surrounding area and will be able to guide you to ensure you make the best of your time in Temecula. We supply helmets, cell phone brackets mounted to the handlebar, a water bottle cage and a bike lock in a convenient saddle bag. We have pannier bags for rent and drawstring bags to purchase.
We are known for our personalized service and attention to detail. Dirk is a mechanical engineer and well trained to take care of maintenance and any repairs. Our wish is to make your ride as comfortable as possible. We are flexible with pick up and drop off times to make sure you have the best experience. We are available by phone or text for any questions. We offer a wine pick up service from the local wineries if you purchased more wine than you can carry on the bike We are proud of our 5-star reviews and what we have established in such a short time. This is the only e-bike rental company servicing Southern California wine country.
