Today we’d like to introduce you to Michel Janse.
Michel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have an odd career… because it combines nutrition, cooking, acting and just being in front of a camera in general. I am a host for Tastemade where I have my own cooking show composed of original recipes. This show, Pretty Healthy, takes classic comfort dishes and puts a healthy twist on them; all of the dishes are vegan and gluten-free. I got to this point by first being diagnosed with Celiac’s Disease (an auto-immune disorder where coming into contact with gluten makes me very sick) and an egg allergy. This made me research how foods affect my body, as well as learn to cook for myself.
Flash forward and I decided to get my degree in Nutrition as well as become a professional cook in an upscale restaurant. Then, I decided I would pair these skills with my love for acting and get in front of Tastemade! Eventually, they granted me my own show. As far as acting goes, I signed with my first agency when I was nine. I have loved film, tv, theatre and commercial acting for as long as I can remember.
When I turned 18, I decided to drive up to LA and live here even though I didn’t know a soul. Since moving here, acting has been steady! I recently was cast as the lead in a CW Seed pilot titled “Cupid’s Match”. This is based off a book on Wattpad with over 35 million reads about a girl, Lila Black, who is matched with Cupid himself. The pilot was just released last week and we all have our fingers crossed that the whole first season will be greenlit!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Never easy. Acting is essentially being vulnerable in front of strangers, letting them critique you, then getting rejected the majority of the time. But, that I have gotten used to by now. I am still in school and working alongside pursuing these other careers, so a huge struggle for me is balancing all I need to do while still making time for fun. I am an extremely type-a person who is on top of things– but still, it is a lot to juggle sometimes!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MICHEL JANSE. Tell us more about the business.
I guess one unique thing about me is that I do merge the science-y worlds with the artsThat’sts very right brain vs left brain. But it makes sense to me and I really enjoy it.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe God gives you opportunities and if you then act on those opportunities with your full heart and soul– good things will come from it.
