Meet Michael Toji of Monkeyland Audio in Burbank and Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Toji.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a post-production supervisor for indie films for over 15 years. In that capacity, I brought many films to Monkeyland Audio for post sound work and mixing. When I transitioned out of post-supervision, I came to Monkeyland as their Director of Operations.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a fairly smooth road given the changes in the Independent Film world, from the effects of the recession impacting the financing non-studio films to the explosive expansion of TV. In that sense, I consider my road to Monkeyland rather trouble free. I feel very fortunate to be here.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Monkeyland Audio story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a boutique post-sound facility, which means we do everything from voice recording, sound design to final mix. We started working primarily on independent feature films, but we have and are expanding into documentaries and all forms of TV from series to stand-alone projects. Apart from the quality of our sound design and mixes, we are known for our friendly, laid-back and client-friendly attitude. We want our clients to feel at home. While we take our work very seriously, we do not have a sterile, corporate feel. We are here because we love and have a passion for what we do.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been extremely fortunate to work for and with many influential people in the film business. This has allowed me to expand my personal circle of contacts to benefit not only my life but for Monkeyland. I would consider myself very lucky. I have not had any run ins with any bad luck.
