Meet Michael Ryu of Michael Ryu Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Ryu.

Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first got introduced to a camera when I was in high school. I had to take an art elective class to fulfill my requirement to graduate haha. Being an Asian, I had to get straight A’s or my parents would’ve killed me, so I believed photography was my best chance at not getting a bad grade. I loved it, but I never thought it would turn into my career. I went to college as an electrical engineering major, but later found out it wasn’t what I wanted to do.

Graduating with no real passion, my photographer friend reached out to me to help him with a wedding. I instantly fell in love and I worked hard to create a portfolio. I became a full-time wedding photographer in August of 2013, so this August will be my 5th year. I am extremely thankful for all my past, now, and future clients who allow me to express my passion for capturing moments through photography!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth haha. I was fortunate that I had an easy living situation, but at times, finance was a huge issue for me, and I contemplated on if this was the right career for me. Also, the creative block is a real thing. It is so difficult when you just can’t seem to be satisfied with your shots, or the way you edit. I went through many changes as a photographer and understanding that you need to create your own brand/style.

Finding your own brand that people appreciate was probably the hardest thing, but it makes me extremely happy when clients see their images, and really appreciate how I shoot/edit to show their real, natural side of their love story.

Michael Ryu Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an intimate wedding and portrait photographer, who love to capture moments that evoke emotions. I love capturing real and natural moments. I want to give photos that capture intimate, timeless, and priceless moments. I want to give something that you will value for a lifetime.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe success is extremely difficult to define being in a creative field. And honestly, I don’t think I will ever feel like I “success” ed in this career. That is the beauty of photography because there’s so much to it that I want to experience and learn.

My hope is that I won’t stay stagnant as a Socal wedding photographer, but a photographer that loves a good story and wants to spread good culture all around the world, whether I continue to shoot weddings or travel all around the world capturing moments.
