Meet Michael Hood of Thermobile in Santa Ana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Hood.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The company started by venture capital group using our parent company to design and manufacture their idea. From 1962 through about 1975, Thermobile operated independently from Hood Manufacturing. About 1975, HMI bought and began operating Thermobile as a DBA. Thermobile is the original small refrigerated van company as far as we know.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Finding good people. Keeping up with changing regulation. Producing interiors for new truck bodies. Finding what the market thinks is valuable.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in providing refrigerated transportation to small business-like florist, restaurant suppliers, medical industry, candy companies, ice houses, fresh produce and fish bait. Anything needing to stay cold. We are known for high quality at a reasonable cost in a short period of time. We are most proud of being in business for over 50 years.

We are different because we are a one-stop shop that listens to our customer.

What were you like growing up?
Generally outgoing, interested in model airplanes, sailing, making things with my hands. I was a joiner, boy scouts, Key Club, Chess Club, Circle K, Young Republicans, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Fiberglass Fabricators Association latter American Composites Manufacturers Association.

Got my first job by selling Sunday papers at 6 years old.
