Today, we’d like to introduce you to Michael Mahler. Michael was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Jessica Redish.
Michael, can you walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always had an interest in music and theatre – I come from a family of actor/singer/musicians. In college at Northwestern I combined my loves of songwriting and theater by composing for the Waa-Mu show, and kept going from there. I’ve had the chance to write for Broadway (new lyrics for Miss Saigon), Netflix (My Little Pony: A New Generation) and regional theaters around the Globe (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, An American Tail, October Sky, Hero and more). I’ve been awarded the Richard Rogers award and several Jeff awards for excellence in Chicago Theater.
Please talk to us about your creative work and career. What should we know?
My work is available through MTI, Theatrical Rights Worldwide, Netflix, and all major music streaming platforms.
So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Jessica Redish and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with Jessica.
Jess and I began working together in college and our friendship has always been a fruitful one. We co-authored a musical fantasia based on the 9/11 Report that had a successful run in Chicago, and I was thrilled to compose for her Exit, Pursued By a Bear musical short film. She combines a strong dance foundation with incredible smarts, bravery, and a sharp sense of humor in all she does. As a collaborator she is incredibly open and receptive – the best idea always wins, and we are relentless in our dedication to improving our work through many iterations and drafts.
