Meet Michael Aarestrup of Lief in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Aarestrup.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Stefan and I grew up in Sweden, surrounded by the serene beauty of nature and the sublime craftsmanship of art and antiques our parents and grandparents collected throughout their lives. Our parents had a textile company called Denbo and their fabrics were used by many of the Danish mid-century designers that have become so sought after today. Many of them had been friends with our grand dad who had a furniture store in Copenhagen where he would sell their pieces.

Dad opened lief in a show room on Melrose Ave in 1989. He started off selling mainly Biedermeier. In the mid 90’s he moved to Beverly and started introducing Gustavian. Stefan and I took over in 2000 when we moved in to an old dye factory on the corner of N. Almont Dr. and Santa Monica Blvd. where we are still located today. Having grown up in a home where mid-century pieces would be mixed with farm pieces from the mid 1800’s as well as castle pieces from the 1700’s we set out to create a showroom like that. We have since added our own line of outdoor furniture, a sofa and are representing a line of wallpaper by textile artist Paula Batali.

Has it been a smooth road?
Off course there’s been struggles but I think we have always just focused on doing our thing and making sure that we stay inspired. That’s why working with other designers and creating our own line has been so great.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the lief story. Tell us more about the business.
As mentioned before Stefan and I are Swedish and our parents are Danish and that’s our heritage that we’re representing. That along with our mix I believe is what we’re known for. Not only do we mix antiques with mid-century but we’re now also incorporating contemporary pieces. And besides for periods we have extensive collections of furniture, lighting, art, rugs, wallpaper and outdoors. All of this is arranged together, hopefully in a beautiful way under the same 14000 sq. ft roof.
