We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I moved to LA, I was very surprised at the small amount of resources and community print shops in Los Angeles, and it was definitely a slot waiting to be filled. The Los Angeles artist community – which is such a talented and active one, has been extremely welcoming to us and we were surprised at the community we’ve been able to foster in our printshop in just three years as a collaborative printmaking studio.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Print Shop LA story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a collaborative, accessible printmaking studios in Chinatown Los Angeles with in house risograph, silkscreen, etching and relief printmaking facilities. We offer Printing services as well as public and private workshops to learn any of the Printing methods we offer. You can become a Member, an Intern, Student or one of our Artist in Residence for access to print using any of our resources and get help from our talented team of in house Printers. Shop Co-Founder and our main/resident publishers Sean Hernandez provides a variety of services including letterpress, relief, and digital printing. Screen printing is his main business, and he specializes in event posters and merchandise as well as design. Natalie Center, Risograph Instructor and Publisher under Printed Pony, was one of the first interns at PSLA. She started the Riso color tests, resources, and workshop program with Mich Miller. Additionally, operating as Crust Zine is Riso Printer and Instructor Jackie Yaeger and Odd Petals – Screen Printer and Instructor Alden Knight.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We have had mostly good luck as a shop, and owe that to the culture and artists community in Los Angeles. We feel very lucky to be in the location we are. The COVID situation has definitely put stress on both the business side and community aspects of The Print Shop LA, as well as for most artists- but we are doing what we can to maintain and act as a resource to this community.
