Meet Micah Jewel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Jewel.

Micah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a singer-songwriter/artist based in Los Angeles but born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. I was young when I started singing. At the age of 12, I picked up a guitar and learned piano and immediately started writing my own music. As soon as I learned how to play chords, I pushed myself to start performing at small music venues. After graduating high school, my dream was to pursue music so I attended Berklee College of music for the summer program.

Eventually, I left and attended a small liberal arts College for an art degree. I realized that college wasn’t for me because it had put a lot of unnecessary pressure on me causing me to lose my creativity and drive. After leaving College, I started working on my EP and collaborating with artists. In 2019, I released a song with Will Crockford called “Cartoon heart” and had more opportunities to collaborate with other artists. Shortly after, I managed to leave a lot behind to move to California and challenge myself. I am still facing many hardships, just like anyone else trying to pursue a hard career, but everyday I feel a step closer. I am currently collaborating with other artists, writing my own music, and still working on an amazing seven tracks EP called “7Billion” that is being mastered.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not. I don’t think that anyone truly has a “smooth road” even if they’ve made it. The discipline it takes to “work” and create everyday can be hard. There are many distractions and obstacles along the way that can distract you from your goal and purpose. I had struggled with many things that have even distracted me from music/art such as toxic relationships, substances, 9-5 jobs, and more. One thing that has always been a hard struggle for me is that I tend to be a perfectionist. I have started many projects, but never think they’re good enough to be “finished”. I still struggle with some of these things, but I am learning on how to fix all my flaws that keep me from not moving forward.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My Artist name is Micah Jewel.  I am a singer/songwriter. I play guitar and piano. I started writing acoustic alternative music. After a couple years of writing I started writing more “rock” music, then eventually writing to EDM and lo-fi house music. I am not only a musician, but I am a painter/drawer and also a tattoo artist. I have done commission artwork for people, have sold artwork and have also been hired into a tattoo shop.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think it will become easier AND harder for musicians. We used to not have the convenience of phones, youtube, spotify, soundcloud (etc), so i think in that way it makes it way easier for your creations to be available for your audience. We are becoming more reliable on our electronics to put our music out there. I don’t exactly know where that will take us as musicians, i just hope people will still appreciate the live music and shows.
