Meet Meryll Montano of The Ayurveda Nest in San Pedro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meryll Montano.

Meryll, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of India, attracts a particular individual who seeks meaning and relief from their pain & suffering. In 2011, I began my personal search for wholeness + well being after a beloved relative passed from diabetes. At the time, I was living an unhealthy lifestyle: smoking and drinking excessively, battling bulimia nervosa, & eating lots of meat and fast food. – In other words, I was a mess inside and out and I was longing for a sign or whisper of direction to walk a different path. I knew that if I continued this lifestyle my life would very well end earlier than I intended and I would miss out on seeing my niece and nephew grow up.

My eyes and palms remained open to receiving a holistic approach to healing on a physical, mental, emotional, & spiritual level. The universe answered by gracing me with a book called “The Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies.” This book contained within its pages a paragraph that would change my life forever.

I was introduced to Ayurveda and its multi- modality approach to healing through diet, herbs, mindful eating practices, self- care rituals, breathing techniques, yoga, and meditation and 7 months later I was enrolled in an intensive program at the University of Health Science in Whittier, CA to become an Ayurveda Health Practitioner.

As a student being treated with Ayurveda, I was humbled by the simplicity & powerful ability that raising awareness about the daily choices we make in regards to what we think, what we do, and how we act can have on the outcome of our health or the latter.

My mission is to promote optimal health through mindful eating and conscious living. By educating individuals & families, I aim to improve the quality of personal, community, and environmental health. I collaborate with two yoga studios: Casa Ayurveda & Yoga in San Pedro, CA and Stella Luna Yoga in Cypress, CA teaching mindful eating and conscious living workshops. I currently offer one-on- one guidance & Ayurveda treatments to individuals who are excited about long- term, sustainable health.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To say the least, this journey has been nothing but challenging from overcoming addiction and eating disorders to adopting a new way of life that forced childhood friendships and 5+ year relationships to come to an end. However, as Hozier says in one of my favorite songs, Someone New, “There’s an art to life’s distractions.”

Every morning before I start my day, I remind myself WHY I do what I do. The rewards of helping people move through dis-ease imbalances & life’s set backs, then seeing them on the other side of the pain & suffering are beyond words and all the money in the world.

If I had to answer what the biggest struggle was, is, and will be throughout this journey as an Ayurveda Health Practitioner, I would say it is befriending the monkey mind. Luckily, the tools that were shared to me and I share with others are aimed to elevate the mind to make wholesome choices to enjoy and create a quality life.

Please tell us about The Ayurveda Nest.
My mission is to help people feel the way they want to feel, create sustainable changes in their lives, and express the highest vision of themselves. I provide one-one- one guidance by creating an individualized program that consists of ayurvedic self-care rituals, dietary foods and mindful eating practices, breathing techniques, yoga, & meditation suggestions based on one’s physical & emotion health aspirations.

I’ve successfully worked with people who experience: chronic fatigue & low energy. constipation & anxiety, IBS, emotional eating & weight loss, insomnia, fibromyalgia & muscle pain, and nasal allergies. The proudest moments I share with you are receiving testimonials like this one here.

” I realized I was completely out of balance and in crisis – both emotionally and physically. I was frustrated that I had become so stressed I was unable to step back and put it into proper perspective. I was frustrated that I was unable to lose weight even though I was eating healthy. I was willing to do anything to feel better at the time I began seeing Meryll. Meryll is a very calm and uplifting energy. I have many great takeaways from this experience. I took away that if you ask for help and are willing to put in the time and effort, finding a better balance is possible. I learned that it is important to listen to your body and to take action when you find yourself approaching crisis, but now I know to take action before it gets to that point – to make balancing all aspects of my spirit and physical body a daily ritual and of the highest priority. I lost 12 pounds, my stress level lowered quite a bit, I achieved better balance with my mental and physical health and I changed the direction of my nutrition toward a more plant-based diet. I feel much calmer and in control of my feelings and have a better balance than I did before working with her. ”

Disease prevention through an individualized plant- based diet, mindful eating, self-care rituals, morning & evening routines, breathing exercises, yoga and meditation, are the highlights of our methods to addressing every unique person that comes to us for self- transformation from the inside out.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’ve failed the expectations of myself and the people around me countless times in my two and a half years as a novice entrepreneur and it’s only made me a better individual, health practitioner, and boss lady.

There are times where I wished I was more discerning with the people I chose to surround myself with and communicated more efficiently with the people I collaborated with but in all honesty, I came out wiser and response able from these experiences so I have these people to thank in full gratitude.
