Meet Mert Ozcan of The Record House in El Segundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mert Ozcan.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story of coming to the States and starting The Record House can be traced back to my time in high school where I became completely obsessed with music and doing anything else with my life went out the window. I ended up studying Music Production and Engineering at Berklee College of Music in Boston and moved to LA right after. I worked at a few studios including Interscope Records and House of Rock, which was a dream studio for any producer, engineer or artist built by Tyler Barth from Blue Microphones and Grammy Award Winning Engineer Jack Joseph Puig. That’s where I met Beto Vargas. We had great chemistry working together and decided to start our own music production company. Since then The Record House grew into a creative collective of music and sound artists working on records, film, television, and games. I involved some of my incredibly talented peers who have worked on major feature films and TV shows. They are Juan Cortes, Juan Carlos Enriquez, Tangelene Bolton, and Erick del Aguila. They have been doing and continue to do outstanding work. It’s great to see where we are and what we can achieve in the future.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think we have been luckier than most. We were able to hit ground running pretty quickly. Still, this is a feast or famine type industry and it takes a while to make the right connections and be recognized for your work but I think we have been lucky to work with people who are appreciative and supportive of our talent, time and efforts.

The Record House – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from others?
We make music and sound. We write songs, produce records and take care of any kind of music and audio needs when it comes to a video production. Specifically that means composing, recording and mixing scores, doing sound design, foley, VO/ADR, dubbing. We put the same care and energy to every project we get, no matter how big or small, so I’m very proud of most of our projects. Some become more popular and receive critical acclaim, which is nice to see but it’s also out of our hands so I try not to be too concerned with that. I’d like to think it’s our good looks and sense of humor that sets us apart but it’s probably our work ethic and quality.
