Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercedes Bumpus.
Mercedes, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I spent 20+ years in the Food Service industry. I worked my way up from Hostess to General Manager. Although I loved what I did, I knew it wasn’t my passion or my gift. After making cakes and treats for my four children over the years, I realized there was something more there than just simply showing my love for them. I discovered my gift! Getting feedback from family and friends helped me also realize I could take things beyond my inner circle. I love people, I love food and thought how amazing would it be to join the two with my gift, and on a greater scale. I researched and studied for a few years then decided to take the leap of faith. I left my corporate position and didn’t look back! I started in the Farmers Market circuit and soon expanded to Pop-up events and Catering. I was always being asked “Where’s your store?” and knew that was the next goal for my company. In March 2020, I opened my first storefront in the Del Amo Fashion Center. I have truly enjoyed putting smiles on faces while doing what I love and what I am passionate about. I look forward to this new chapter and continuing to grow in the future.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has not been easy. Starting a new career in my late 30’s was very intimidating, but I knew I had to do it. I owed it to my gift to try and I was also excited for the new challenge. The most challenging thing I would say has been building a consistent clientele who would support my company’s needs. Some days I questioned if I made the right decision, but always prayed and trusted the process. Through the ups and downs, I appreciate everything I learned along the way.
Please tell us about Mercy’s Cakes in Cups.
I am a self-taught Baker. I make cupcakes, cakes, cookies, muffins, brownies, and many specialty confections. All of my treats are made from scratch, with love, and real ingredients. My specialty is cupcakes. They’re cute, convenient, and en trend. Lol. I am most proud of presenting beautiful delicious treats that anyone can enjoy!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I remember being in preschool and I would climb a berry tree and collect them in the skirt of my dress, which would stain it. I would sit in the grass and eat them until it was time to go back inside. They were sweet and tangy and I was so happy.
