Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Milhouse and Stephanie St. John-Mountain.
Melody and Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2005, Stephanie and I started working together in a salon in Redlands. We just clicked and got along really good. Over the next 10 years or so, we would relocate to a few different salons trying to find the perfect place. But every time we would relocate, we would go together. We both wanted the same things in a salon and it just made sense to go together. Even though we were both independent contractors, we were worked good by each other’s side helping each other creatively and just had fun together. In 2014, Stephanie found a cool location in downtown Redlands that was the perfect spot for a salon. She told me about it and it just seemed right.
We decided to start our own salon that day. We had talked about it before but it just never seemed like the right time. But now it was! We wanted to create the vibe we always wanted in a salon. We have worked in some awesome salons over the years and knew exactly what we wanted to pick and choose from the salons to create our ideal creative work environment. And so it began!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been pretty smooth overall. I have done hair for 17 years and Stephanie has done it for 20. We have been in the salon environment for a long time now. But it is different for us to have to manage personalities within the salon. That I would say has been the most challenging, as previous booth renters, we just showed up, did hair, and left. Now we have to still do that but then make sure our staff is happy and content and copasetic. We have an amazing group of stylist. We couldn’t be more proud of our whole staff. We have been open for 3 years, and so far it has gone pretty smooth!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with House of Saints Salon – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a 6 station salon, with 4 full time and 2 part time stylist. We specialize in cuts and color. We carry Unite and R+CO hair products. House of Saints Salon has a chill vibe with no pretentious egos. We can strongly stand behind each of our stylist work and know they will produce their very best. We are all passionate about what we do and it shows. This was important to us. We don’t hire stylist to just pay the rent. We want them on our team to make our salon shine.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Redlands is a cool place to live with a lot of trendy people. Young and old! So our job is to help keep them looking good! Our clientele ranges from teens to 80 years olds. Redlands is small and downtown is packed with small boutique shops and restaurants and salons. So sometimes parking is not always the easiest and quickest to find!
