Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Hammer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Melody. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am the CEO of Loud Lacquer. I have worked in the digital beauty space for about ten years now. Starting as the Executive Producer for the first digital network for fashion and beauty called Style Haul before moving on to become the Chief Creative Officer at Seventeen Magazine’s YouTube channel/network.
From there, I went on to consult for several publishers, networks, and influencers in the fashion and beauty space before ultimately working for a beauty brand for four years. The interesting thing was, at most all of those companies, my bosses were always men. I grew frustrated of being told by bosses that I was too LOUD and opinionated about what women wanted in the beauty space. I had a vision for a brand that was fun, unexpected and female-owned. So I embraced my LOUD vision and made it.
Has it been a smooth road?
Oh man, starting a small business is hard work and such a roller coaster. There are some days that I get feedback from customers that they love and identify with my story. Or that our branding and video campaigns are so unique and fun. And it’s on those days that I am so glad that I took a chance on myself and now get to do exactly what I love and inspire women while I’m at it. And then there are other days when I wonder why I couldn’t just be happy at my last job where all the pressure was on someone else. But on those days, I try to take my own advice and stay positive and confident and know that nothing worth doing is easy. But it is so worth it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Loud Lacquer – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is called Loud Lacquer and we make nail polish. We are freeAf* of harmful chemicals, cruelty-free, vegan, long-lasting and quick-drying. But what really makes us stand out is our mission to inspire confidence in women. Women are 21% more likely to get passed up for a promotion but long-lasting Loud Lacquer inspires confidence. In fact, its been proven that saying out LOUD “You got this”, will put you in the right mindset to do something hard, like ask for a promotion. So I encourage our community to let their nails be the reminder they need that they, in fact, got this! #stayloudbabbs
We also believe that every woman deserves to feel confident and so any bottle of Loud Lacquer that is returned is donated to an amazing organization called Project Beauty Share that provides personal hygiene, cosmetics and beauty products to non-profit organizations who serve women and families overcoming abuse, addiction, homelessness and poverty to help restore hope and dignity in their lives.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have lived in LA for 15 years now and to quote Kelsea Ballerini “I’ve got a love and hate relationship with LA”. I love that I was able to enter my career as an assistant and work my way to the top, having never gone to college. They say it’s all about who you know and LA makes it easy to network and try different variations of the same field. On that same token, it can be very lonely when you realize most of your friends are actually acquaintances who are also just trying to network their way to the top. It wasn’t until I had my first kid that I really planted roots and tried to find other new moms and real relationships. But what is so great about LA is that I can live in the suburbs and still drive in for meetings or a nice dinner at a cool restaurant that isn’t a chain.
