Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello my name is Melissa. I’m 24 years old and I identify myself as a latina. I’m from Guatemala and came here to the United States when I was 9. I stay in Los Angeles specifically Watts. As of right now Los Angeles has been my hometown since I was 9. My passion for makeup and creating content started when I was 12. I would watch big creators such as Daisy Marquez, James charles and many others and tell myself I want to be one of them when I’m older. So that’s what I did. I open a instagram account when I was 13 and started to post my videos on how to do certain eyeshadow looks, how to apply makeup and what type of lipsticks where good at that time. Thats when I knew I wanted to do more so l open a TikTok account back in 2018 and started to post of my eyeshadows looks and little by little my account started to grow. I started to love the feedback so l continued to post more not only makeup but reviewing different types of makeup. As of today my TikTok account has 3,729 and my Instagram has 7,194 yall can find me under @meli_badbitch for both accounts. My goal is for my account to continue growing and inspiring little me’s out there that if you want something you love so much to reach for it and forget about what others are going to think. Also I just recently lost 30 pounds after struggling many years of not being able to lose weight. So now my account not only consists of beauty but l also give tips on how to lose weight, what type of foods to eat, etc. In other words as Im getting older and my mindset is getting wiser, I want to incorporate my wisdom into my videos. I like helping people and love to share what has help me and that might help others. In other words my account consists of lifestyle/ beauty content. I try to incorporate different things into my content such as how to do your hair, hauls, what makeup are in right now, what type of makeup is good for oily/ dry or a combination of both, how to do your eyebrows or wax them, etc. I want my page to be very informative and something they can always go back to and watch if they don’t know how to do certain things. Therefore, I want to be a inspiration for others and being able to work more with brands and put myself out there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, one was learning how to speak English. When I was in middle school I would get bullied because I wasn’t able to speak English or when I would I tried to they would laugh at the accent I had back then. But that did not stop me from achieving my goals. Also, when I started creating makeup content I would get shy/nervous and overthink too much. As I got older I change my mindset and now I just post and forget about what others are going to think or if they find my videos cringy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love kids and my goal is to become a pediatric occupational therapist. I currently work at a school and I’m in the literacy program helping students how to read write etc. I also help newcomers who are students that comes from another country and teach them how to speak English. I’m known for my sensitivity towards kids and my creativity beyond that. I’m basically a cry baby when it comes kids. If I had all the money in the world I would take all those kids in the foster system and adopt them and give them all the love, attention, and support they need. In other words, I want to incorporate my knowledge in occupational therapy into my videos to help others that might not have those benefits and hope they reach other countries that doesn’t offer those services. I’m most proud of who I became as a person such as putting myself out there in the beauty community/ content creation industry, obtaining my associates in child psychology, working with different beauty brands and learning as I go. What sets me apart from others is the way I express myself through videos and wanting to share my knowledge, my experiences and my career into my videos so they could helpful to others.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
As of right now the apps that has helped me the most when it comes to editing my videos is VN video editor and Imovie . I use both everyday when it comes to content creation or filming everything.
