Meet Melissa Naulin of Naulin Aesthetics in Thousand Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Naulin.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I was very young I’ve always been interested in makeup, beauty and skin care. I used to force my little sister to let me give her makeovers all the time; lashes, nails, I loved it all! In high school I started waxing, first learning on myself, then for friends. I would do makeup for all the school dances.

But, beauty was always a hobby to me in the beginning until someone said, “why don’t you go to school for this?”. Honestly, it never occurred to me. I was just having fun. It wasn’t until I turned 24 that I decided to start my career as an Esthetician. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Fast forward 17 years, I still love what I do with a passion! I spent many years in several salons, managing a team of 20+ employees and learning the ins and outs of running a business and being an entrepreneur. I’m continuously learning and have carefully chosen mentors that are recognized as the best in the industry.

I now have a beautiful, private spa that I share with two amazing massage therapists. I have built my business primarily on my waxing skills, specializing in brows and Brazilians. I also offer a variety of skin care treatments, including chemical peels and Dermafile resurfacing, as well as airbrush tanning.

In the last 6 months, I completed two certifications in the art of Microblading, which I absolutely love. This service is quickly growing and I couldn’t be happier with where Naulin Aesthetics is today.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The greatest challenge of my career was when I decided to venture off on my own and start my own business. The timing was horrible. I was 5 months pregnant, it was right before the holidays and the economy tanked to an all-time low. But, I was determined to make it work. I’m a fighter, not a quitter and I am so passionate about my profession and what I am able to do for people. Giving up was never an option. I focused on offering incredible customer service with impeccable results and have built lasting relationships with my clients that have remained loyal for many years.

Please tell us about Naulin Aesthetics.
Naulin Aesthetics is definitely known for premium waxing services! I specialize in eyebrows. I am obsessed with brows and I love shaping and enhancing brows through both waxing and microblading.

When I perform an eyebrow wax, I take my time. I analyze their current shape, what part of the brow is missing and what needs to be taken away. I meticulously trim one hair at a time. I use a high quality, low temperature, zinc oxide based wax that is very gentle on the skin, yet so effective to remove even the finest vellus hair. Then, I go around the brow and tweeze any stray hairs to create a clean, crisp line. Based on the client’s desired look and brow goals, I will then highlight the brow bone which gives the eye a lift and makes the brows appear fuller. I’ll finish by filling in any thin areas with either powder or pencil for a polished, natural look.

In addition to brows, I have also been performing Brazilian bikini waxing for close to 20 years. I’ve seen it all, I’ve waxed it all and my goal is always to be clean, quick and make my clients as comfortable as possible. I use a hard wax for Brazilians which does not stick to skin, only hair, and is not sticky. I always wear gloves and never double dip!

I believe what sets me apart from others is the fact that I stand behind my quality of work 100% and if a client is dissatisfied for any reason, I will offer to do the service again at no charge. My business has grown through word of mouth alone since day 1, therefore my client’s happiness is extremely important to me. I work hard, I train relentlessly and I hold every client to an extraordinary high standard.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My childhood was not the picture perfect, two parent household. But, I was lucky enough to have the most amazing dad any kid could ask for, who loved my sister and me with all his heart. He was both mom and dad. “Mr. Mom”. And raising two girls I’m sure was far from easy. We struggled, we compromised and we made the best of our situation. We didn’t know any different. My dad worked his butt off and made a lot of sacrifices to provide for us, to send us to a private school, to keep a roof over our head. And because of this, my dad has taught me independence and responsibility. To appreciate what you have and to work hard for the things you want.  Looking back on my childhood, I have many fond memories; Playing in the sandbox, riding my bike, swimming in the summer, and listening to 70’s rock while dad worked in the yard. I loved my childhood.
