Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa B.
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My musical journey began at a young age when I discovered my love for singing. Growing up, I would often perform for family and friends, and it was evident that music was going to be a significant part of my life. As I honed my singing skills, I naturally gravitated towards songwriting, using it as a means to express my emotions and experiences.
In my late teens, I took a leap of faith and started performing at local open mics and small venues. These early performances provided invaluable experience and helped me find my voice as an artist. It was during this time that I started writing my own songs, using my personal stories as lyrical inspiration.
One of the pivotal moments in my journey was when I decided to take control of the production process. This decision led me to learn the art of music production, enabling me to have full creative control over my music. I invested countless hours into mastering the technical aspects of music production, and this skill set allowed me to bring my musical visions to life.
I continued to build my repertoire, and I’m grateful for the mentorship and support I received from fellow musicians and collaborators. Over the years, I released my music independently, building a small but dedicated fan base. Social media and online platforms played a significant role in connecting with a global audience and expanding my reach.
As my career progressed, I had the opportunity to work with other talented artists and producers, collaborating on projects that pushed the boundaries of my creativity. This collaborative spirit opened new doors for my music and allowed me to explore different genres and styles.
One of the most significant moments in my career was when I produced and sang on the song “Moonstone,” which is currently being considered for a Grammy nomination in the Best Arrangement, Instrument, and A Cappella category. This recognition from the music industry further fueled my passion and dedication to my craft, reaffirming my commitment to creating music that transcends boundaries and resonates with people.
Today, I am an established singer, songwriter, and producer with a growing catalog of original songs that reflect my unique artistic vision. I’ve performed at various renowned venues and festivals, and my music has been recognized in the industry, gaining airplay and streaming recognition. I’m truly excited about the future, with an unwavering commitment to creating music that tells stories, evokes emotions, and connects with a global audience.
My journey as a singer, songwriter, and producer has been an ongoing adventure of self-discovery and creative growth, and I’m looking forward to where it will take me next, especially with the exciting possibility of a Grammy nomination on the horizon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In the early days of my artistic journey, I faced a fair share of challenges. One of the most significant hurdles was discovering my true artistic identity and understanding the unique message my art conveyed. It was like trying to find my place in a vast creative landscape, and it took time to truly understand what my art meant to me and to the world.
Additionally, finding the right producers who could create music that complemented my voice was a journey in itself. Fortunately, I had the privilege of working with the talented producer, B. Howard. He had an incredible knack for shaping my vocals to fit seamlessly with the music. His expertise elevated my music to another level, opening my eyes to the profound connection between music and the human spirit. Working alongside my engineer, Michael Ashby, was equally transformative, as he had a gift for weaving the magic of sound into the musical tapestry that B. Howard and I were creating.
As a woman navigating the music industry, I encountered unique challenges. My quest to blend music and technology while sharing my personal narrative pushed the boundaries of what’s typically expected in the industry. I aimed to connect with my fans on a deeper level—those who sought a more profound connection. This path was filled with its own set of struggles, but it was also deeply rewarding, allowing me to explore uncharted territory in my artistic expression.
Another significant challenge I faced was taking on the roles of artist, label, and marketer simultaneously. Juggling these responsibilities was demanding, but it also became a profound learning experience. In fact, it taught me so much that I felt compelled to write a book called “Digitally Independent” to help other artists navigate these challenges on their own artistic journeys. Despite the struggles, these experiences served as valuable lessons that ultimately strengthened me as an artist.
My journey, though marked by its difficulties, has shaped me into the artist I am today. It’s a testament to the power of persistence, creativity, and the unwavering desire to connect with my audience on a deeper level.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
“The COVID-19 crisis has been a challenging period for all of us, but it has also been a time of significant learning and growth. As an artist, it forced me to adapt and evolve in ways I hadn’t expected. Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned include the value of resilience and the power of creativity.
During the pandemic, live performances became limited, and the way we connect with our audience drastically changed. This pushed me to explore new avenues, including virtual concerts and live streaming. I learned the importance of staying adaptable and finding innovative ways to engage with my fans.
Additionally, the crisis emphasized the significance of mental health and self-care. As an artist, it’s easy to get caught up in the demands of our work, but the pandemic reminded me to prioritize my well-being. It allowed me to reflect on the deeper meaning and purpose of my art, and I believe this has added a more profound dimension to my work.
The COVID-19 crisis has also highlighted the importance of community and supporting fellow artists. We’ve all faced similar challenges, and coming together to support one another has been heartening. I’ve learned that, even in times of adversity, the arts can be a source of comfort and inspiration for both artists and their audiences.
In summary, the pandemic has reinforced the importance of adaptability, self-care, and community in the artistic journey. It has been a period of growth and reflection that will undoubtedly shape my art and my approach to my career in the years to come.”
