Meet Meghan Ulloa of Mind & Motion in Hancock Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Ulloa.

Meghan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I came into my practice as a dancer, so my curiosity for movement started at a young age. I liked having a skill that could express different facets of myself. I didn’t think I was beautiful but I could become beautiful through dance. I liked that I could have control over my image in a way… My pursuit in the study of movement continued with a B.A. in college and a M.S. in kinesiology. I apprenticed with my mentor at her Pilates studio in the Bay area shortly after graduating from my undergrad. She taught me how to be a movement practitioner. She’s really a healer and I learned so much from her.

I opened Mind & Motion in 2011. We offer small group Pilates classes and one-on-one sessions. I don’t believe exercise should be a chore. We have so obligations in life… especially those of us with families. The little time we have for ourselves should be spent on something that brings about reflection, a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. The classes at Mind & Motion don’t just take you through the routine, they teach you about your body and yourself. There is full engagement in those hours to connect you to yourself and to your physiology.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There haven’t been any external struggles but I have experienced struggles within. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12 and that has informed a lot of what I know about pain, alignment, proprioception. I have had intermittent chronic back pain which has been a curse and a blessing. Its taught me so much about the mind/body connection. Our thoughts dictate our experience by a landslide… even how we experience pain. Understanding the mind is integral for healing. I also have a lot of empathy for others.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mind & Motion story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a Movement Specialist and Kinesiologist. I study and teach movement. That can look differently for different people. At my studio, Mind & Motion, I offer group pilates classes as well as one-on-one sessions. The classes are geared more toward the classical pilates repertoire and flowing movement. The one-on-one sessions are intended to help clients understand the specific patterns of their body (and issues). The studio is known for not only being a place to work out, but also a place of learning: the classical pilates repertoire, anatomy and mechanics. During the first session I do an assessment to see how we can best serve the individual in their movement practice and in day-to-day life. I can then set up a home program, direct them to the pilates classes or help them work through any chronic physical issues in private sessions. I like to take clients through an experience of aha! moments. I think this sets me apart.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck. At least it hasn’t played much of a role in my life. 🙂 I’ve worked very hard.
