Meet Meghan O’Sullivan of Meghan O’Sullivan Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan O’Sullivan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for photography began back in 2005 when I was the designated photographer on a trip to Paris with family and friends. Exploring the city, the art, and the culture was inspiring to say the least. I contemplated photography as a career, but chose to err on the side of caution. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, completed a teaching credential, and earned my Master’s degree in Education. After unstable employment as a teacher and starting a family with my husband, I just decided that there was no time like the present and finally started taking steps to open my own business. I interned for a dear friend and inspiring photographer, Melissa Vossler, and from there began taking photos of my friend’s and their families. After our second son was born, I officially opened up my business officially! My business has continued to grow year after year and month after month, without fail. It has been challenging and exhausting with two little ones (now 2 and 4) to establish and grow my business, but the reward is great! I love what I do. I love being able to capture people, their personalities, and their relationships, and hopefully, give them photos they’ll cherish for years and years. I get to be creative and be my own boss, and I get to be home with my kids during these early years. It’s been the most rewarding job I’ve ever had and I’m so grateful for a husband who has encouraged me from the very beginning. I’m so happy I decided to stop dreaming and just go for it!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge for me has always been the fear. Fear of failure. Fear of judgment. Fear of rejection. What if I wasn’t good enough? What if I failed and was just a wannabe? Those feelings of self-doubt are inevitable, but luckily, I really and truly have the most supportive husband to remind me that I can do it and to never give up. In a profession with so much raw talent, it can be overwhelming to put yourself and your work out there for the world to compare. I’ve found the best way to work through those feelings of doubt is to set up a shoot just for me! I get to be creative without worrying about client expectations. It always refreshes me and gets my mind back in a positive place.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in natural light photography focusing on real and organic moments. I photograph all the important moments in life including maternity, newborns, family, engagements, and weddings. I also offer branding photography for individuals and companies. I’m most proud of my ability to capture emotion while still allowing my clients to feel calm and at ease during their session. Most people are not a fan of having their photos taken, and I can’t tell you how many people have told me I have a calming presence and how easy the experience was.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was involved in a lot of activities, but always the quieter and shy one of the group. I tend to think a lot, and then overthink all of those thoughts, and then keep all of it in my head! I always tried my hardest at school and sports, and loved being a part of a team. My dad always taught me that if you’re going to do something, then you better do it well. HIs work ethic is incredible and his example has definitely led the way for me in how I view my business. I’m not here to be mediocre. I’m here to be the best I possibly can!
