Meet Megan Edd of Hair Cocktails

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Edd.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in a US Military household. My mom always had a knack for cutting hair and doing makeup, and she utilized her makeup artist skills in mock battle scenarios to show what wounded soldiers would look like. She passed this trade down to me by giving me tips and lessons while growing up.

My involvement in this industry began when I was in high school. During Prom season there were girls whose parents couldn’t afford makeup or hairstyling services, so I offered my help and loved it! This experience gave me an opportunity to design my own styles and develop my own personal style. My friends would be amazed with what they called was their transformation! That stuck in my brain. TRANSFORMATION!

Fast forward a few years, I was working toward a degree in law but was struggling to find a true connection to the profession. My dad knew my skill set and came home one day with some surprising news: he had enrolled me in beauty school, and courses began the following week. If it weren’t for my dad’s encouragement to blaze my own path, I wouldn’t be where I am today. While in beauty school I pressed the bounds of my creativity to try different, if not outlandish, hairstyles in hopes of creating a fresh and different look for clients.

After obtaining my state licensure, I continued to carry my dad’s encouragement and my mom’s compassion and creativity with me. I spent time at the local homeless shelters donating makeup and haircut services to mothers during Mother’s day. I continued to get the same ”transformation” reaction. This simple change made those mothers feel good about themselves and opened the door for future opportunities.

My time with them inspired me. I believe that providing people with different look has the power to transform their lives. This has become my passion. When customers come to my salon, I strive to offer them an experience that will lead to a transformation in both look and life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My transition into the world of styling was by no means ordinary or smooth, but it is a road that made me strong, courageous and empathetic. Following beauty school, I began working in a salon that specialized in extensions and color, which would eventually become the specialty in which my own business would be based around.

During that time I got married and continued to immerse myself in the profession. A year later my husband suddenly passed away which forced me to change careers paths in order to make ends meet. During this time I was aching for a creative outlet, and it took the encouragement of my family to take a leap of faith and get back to pursuing a career in hair full time not long after I accepted a stylist position and never looked back!

I worked in that salon for a few years as I developed my skills and clientele, but I knew I needed a different opportunity to really grow as the stylist I wanted to be. My family and I took another devastating toll when my younger sister passed away. It felt like it was just one hit after another and when I went back to work, I kept telling myself that life is too short not to be 100% fulfilled.

After talking it over with my family, I made the strategic move to rent my own suite at Phoenix Salon Suites. I made this investment in myself and my vision six years ago, and I have never looked back. Since then, I got married and now have two beautiful children.

After having my daughter last year, I decided it was the right time to continue to grow my business, so I expanded and added amazing stylists to my team. I have grown professionally, personally and have doubled my business in only a year. I strive to make sure my salon and team offer the best service possible. We are always looking to grow professionally and officer unique services to our customers.

In the next year, I am hoping to develop my business even further by opening a storefront salon and bring on board additional like-minded stylists to this team.

Hair Cocktails – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hair Cocktails was borne out of the passion to help customers get the look they want and deserve. From working in this business for over 15 years, I’ve learned that the individuals coming to my salon is not just looking for a particular service but rather guidance and assurance. At Hair Cocktails, not only do we specialize in color corrections, extensions, and blonding, but first and foremost providing our clients with honest consideration and respect for their needs and wants in both “look” and life.

As a stylist, I recognize the unique relationship that I have with my clients. On the back of many of our business cards, it should read, “Stylist, Counselor, Friend.” I believe that is what sets Hair Cocktails apart from a regular salon. My customers come for styling expertise and stay because, in addition to a great new look, they experience an honest connection and friendship.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The true highlight of my career thus far has been the opportunities I’ve experienced in the past year. Hair Cocktails has seen tremendous growth. In just one year we have been able to double not only the staff but our space and clientele as well! We are looking to continue this expansion into the coming year.
