Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Fulps and Devin Wiggins.
Meagan and Devin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We call ourselves, A Couple Of Trainers! Literally. We’re two fitness trainers and we’re indeed a couple. Devin is a seasoned movement specialist and Meagan is a former professional athlete. We both currently reside in Los Angeles where we met 4 years ago, but little did we know we grew up only a mile away from each other in the small suburb of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. We went to rival high schools and probably cheered against each other’s sports teams, but now we’ve decided to join forces creating our own fitness company hoping to help others reach their goals in the most FUN and enjoyable way possible!
We’re all about balance, equally preaching about living a healthy life as well as living a fulfilling, adventurous one. We strongly believe fitness can and should be fun. More often than not, we see people treat fitness like a chore. Something they just want to get over with. Get in and out. Don’t talk to anyone. Avoid eye-contact. Rush home. When we look at fitness like that, it definitely doesn’t sound fun. We often deprive ourselves from the beauty in having a shared fitness experience with others. When we both played on a sports team, the bonds we made with our teammates were the deepest and most fun we’ve ever encountered! So we thought, why can’t we bring that back? Why can’t we be on a team again? Why can’t we bring back the days when we didn’t even realize we were working out because we were having SO MUCH FUN? From this thought, FIELD DAY was born, which is what we call our boot camps! Our boot camps have received the most buzz, as recently we were featured on KTLA. We’re taking our small-scale field days and doing a HUGE Field Day Dash with 13 studios in LA (feel free to email for more details on this and I can send you some cool promo docs). Other than boot camps, we also love to do couples/wedding training for engaged couples and just recently started filming our own workout videos and are super excited to keep doing more of those and head into that digital direction so we can reach more people!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Whenever you create your own business, it’s not going to be a smooth road. First of all, it is expensive and exhausting (but oh so worth it).
We both work full time and then additionally have to keep up with all the planning/training/social media that comes with A Couple Of Trainers. So of course, the balance is a lot! Our schedules can be hectic and of course, we want to find time to take care of ourselves and workout/eat right. Sometimes those things get sacrificed, which seems so crazy considering we are trying to help people in that realm. But we are learning how to balance everything better and soon we hope to get some more minds and hands to help us grow and accomplish our goals! It’s been an incredible journey so far and we are so blessed to continue to work on something we’re both so crazy passionate about — not to mention we get to do it together!
A Couple Of Trainers – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
So our business offers all different types of training — personal, couples/wedding, small group, online and group training (aka Field Days). We have definitely received the most buzz from our boot camps we like to call Field Days. Field Day is a challenging full-body workout incorporating group competition and classic field day games with a fitness twist. Think dodgeball, plank freeze tag, tug-o-war, etc. You name it, we’ve probably done it. You’re going to sweat profusely while laughing back your 6-pack. We also almost always do something fun afterwards as well so we can get to know each other beyond sweat. Sometimes it’s drinks, sometimes it’s a pool party or movie night.
We all get a little closer and we all get a little better. We also hop around LAs hottest studios to host our field days to keep it fresh and exciting. We’ve been to Speedplay, Sanctuary Fitness, LazrFit, Reebok LA (once a month) and Rise Nation. We hope to continue to expand!
We are also doing our first BIG Weho extended event called the Field Day Dash. We’ve partnered with Reebok LA and 13 of LAs hottest studios to put on a fitness scavenger hunt! Teams of 3 will run from studio to studio to complete challenges. There will be a big showdown at the end and lots of prizes. Not to mention, all proceeds will go to Puerto Rico hurricane relief organizations! It will be an incredible experience for all our clients, help studios get more foot traffic in the door, as well as help a good cause. We plan to take this big event to other cities as well 🙂
We are most proud of the positive response/impact it has had on our clients. So many people love our concept of combining fun/fitness and making it very community oriented (also competition based… people go crazy for competition!) We just want everyone to know they are welcome, no matter what level you’re at. You’re going to make new friends and get a killer workout. Working out shouldn’t be such a drag!! So definitely seeing the laughs and smiles and new friendships created from our community has definitely given us endless joy and we hope to continue to grow our fit fam!
What sets us apart from others is first and foremost there aren’t that many training couples in the game… not to mention interracial training couples! 😉 I think it’s really cool that we have both perspectives and we can cater to whatever our clients’ needs are. Our emphasis on integrating fun into fitness and importance for the community is definitely another factor that sets us apart. We are friends with so many of our clients. We love them and don’t just always want to tell them what to do 😉 that’s why we try to have fun events in addition to training. (e.g. pool parties, drinks, brunch, etc.) Lastly, I think we might be the only training duo that specifically does wedding training for engaged couples. It’s so awesome because our clients will get the individual attention they deserve from having both of us, but they still get to experience the transformation and bonding with their significant other. It’s really awesome to see! And we just love meeting new couples to not only train with, but double date with! Haha.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s really hard to pinpoint one specific highlight — so we’ll give you a couple! Recently, someone who has a family struggling in Puerto Rico sent us several personal videos on Instagram that were so incredibly heartfelt… His poor family and friends are going through so much right now and he reached out to us asking for help. He believed so strongly in us and that we could make a true impact… we both were so blown away. That really put everything into perspective, because while we don’t have this HUGE following quite yet, he still believed we were influential and could help make a difference and that alone, that realization that we could make a difference was pure bliss. We were overjoyed and instantly made a way for this to happen. We hope that what we do can continue to present moments like these to us!
Another awesome moment was when we got the call from KTLA to be featured live on 4 of their morning segments. At this point in our business, we were soooo fresh, only having started 4 months prior, so to get such a rad experience right out the gates were awesome and gave us a little confidence moving forward.
