Meet Nikki McRory of McRory Pediatric Services in Tarzana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki McRory.

Nikki, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Having worked as a certified nursing assistant at our local nursing home in high-school, I knew that I wanted a career that involved helping people. That is when I decided to go to college and pursue a degree in communication disorders. After working in private practice, schools, nursing homes and hospitals I knew that I wanted something that was my own. So, I started out slowly by providing services in family homes however quickly developed a wait list and determined it was time to take the plunge and get an office space so that I could accommodate more families.

It was listening to families share their struggles with having to drive their child to various locations around the valley in a day in order to meet all of their children’s therapy needs given that there was not one clinic that provided a variety of services that got me thinking that perhaps we could be that company. Not too long after that. My husband decided to make a career change from being a financial advisor to joining the practice as the company’s C.E.O. We have since grown to offer families a variety of therapeutic services in addition to speech-language therapy, which include physical therapy, occupational therapy, child development services, ABA, social skills training, adaptive skills training, marriage & family therapy, parent training classes, early intervention programs, a therapeutic preschool program, healthy relationships & sexuality courses for adolescents and teens on the autism spectrum, as well as sib shops.

We are proud to be able to offer quality services throughout the San Fernando Valley & Santa Clarita Valley, as well as to be able to support approximately 800-1,000 families annually.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Learning how to navigate through various third party payers can be a challenge, whether that be our local regional centers, school districts or insurance companies. Since opening our clinic over 20 years ago we have seen a lot of changes as it relates to legislation and funding of services for those with developmental delays or disabilities. With these changes of course means we had to make changes in our business model. I would like to think however that changes like these keep us on our toes and maintain our “outside of the box” thinking and innovation.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the McRory Pediatric Services story. Tell us more about the business.
McRory Pediatric Services, Inc. was developed with the intention of providing the highest quality of evidence-based therapeutic services that involve families as integral members of the therapy team, as well as providing an exceptional work environment for our team members, and I believe that we have achieved those goals. As a company we are not only unique because of the variety of services in which we are able to provide to families, but also for the way in which we deliver our services within innovative frameworks. We are fortunate to be able to support families and their children from birth to 18 years of age. It is a unique journey for each family and is truly a blessing to watch their children grow, flourish and reach their utmost potential.

We are known not only for our services, but also for our highly collaborative and compassionate team members who truly care about what they do. When you walk into our facility you will see people smiling and will feel the warmth that resonates between the walls. We are proud not only because we believe that what we do is important, but because we also know that we make a difference in the lives of the families we are blesses to support, as well as for our individual team members that work at our company as everyone is equally valued, supported and appreciated.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am not sure that luck has played a roll or not. While we certainly put many long hours into developing our programs and getting the company where it is today, failure just was not an option. Being the first person in my family to obtain a college education, I have always been a driven person and if someone ever told me “no” I would simply figure out another way. I have also been blessed with having amazing and supportive people in my court, including my husband of 21 years, our Clinical Director Diane Geary for 14 years as well as many other encouraging team members.
