Meet McKenzie Goodwin

Today we’d like to introduce you to McKenzie Goodwin.

McKenzie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
One fateful night I was invited out to a comedy show by a friend of mine, who was performing in the Main Room at the Comedy Store. I was so thrilled to see this fresh-faced musician-turned-comedian, who was only a month into stand up, perform at such a historic venue (I would later learn this was a “bringer show”). After watching this friend of mine, completely bomb harder than I have ever seen a human bomb — I mean she really ate shit — I thought to myself “Hey… I could do this” and the rest is history.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been as smooth as it gets for a queer female stand up comic. I’m lucky in the sense that I co-host the show “Two Dykes and a Mic” with the lovely and unforgettable Rachel Scanlon, so traveling and touring is a dream when you have someone with you who you’re comfortable with and can enjoy all these different cities with. Or– completely hate certain cities with. Having a friend on the road has made it so much easier and more enjoyable, and when we deal with homophobia and misogyny… we get to do it together!

Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
“Two Dykes and a Mic” started as a podcast and when Rachel and I get emails and DMs about how much we’ve helped our queen listeners through rough times, or how much it means to them to have more LGBTQ representation, it means the world to me. All the fan mail we get makes everything we’re doing take on a whole different meaning. It’s not just two stands up comics shooting the shit anymore, we’re actually helping these queer people from all over the world feel more understood.

I’m also super proud that we’ve been able to have a running monthly show in LA for almost two years now and this year began to take it across the U.S. “Two Dykes and a Mic” just got back from the east coast tour and we’ve been branching out to new cities and areas we never thought possible.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the biggest key to success is surrounding yourself with people who are reliable, honest and believes in you. My friends have helped me more than anything else, from letting me pitch ideas off them even when they are flaming trash, to promoting our shows every month, wearing our merch or in certain cases, just yelling our theme song at crowds of people (Stephanie I’m looking at you). I believe everyone around me has made me better and pushed me to where I am today.
