Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Rosalia
Hi Maya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an independent singer- songwriter and music producer. As a singer-songwriter, I strive to create authentic and emotionally resonant lyrics and in music production, I focus on crafting innovative soundscapes. Having acted extensively as a child, I developed a strong foundation in the craft, which has become very valuable in my work as a songwriter and performer.
Acting allows me to tap into the emotions and experiences that inspired my songs, helping me convey their depth and vulnerability during performances and music videos.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started doing this young because I was simply born with this innate determination, but that determination cost me many friendships along the way. There have been people who sought to use me, whether for clout, connections, or attention. Each time this happened, I shifted my focus back to building my dreams, which led to more personal sacrifice.
During my time at music conservatory, I felt like I was constantly being used, whether by guys with ulterior motives or friends who weren’t genuinely supportive. People tried to leverage my connections and my ability to bring communities together for their own benefit. It’s important to recognize how lonely that can be. The road to success can feel isolating when you’re pushing boundaries others aren’t willing to cross.
True loyalty is rare, and not everyone is capable of supporting you as you grow. Over time, I’ve encountered countless rejections, even from family and those I once considered closest to me. These experiences taught me the valuable lesson of self-reliance which is seeking neither external validation nor applause. Even when you achieve significant milestones, you’ll find that many will remain silent.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been heavily influenced by musical theater and Broadway showtunes because of what my mom listened to and the music I grew up around. I’ve always loved vintage, old Hollywood, and Regency styles, and I wanted to incorporate that into my music because it felt so personal to me.
In late 2023, I released my holiday single, “Found My Home” a project I worked on with a film composer who also had a classical background. That song was my introduction to a classical crossover sound, which I expanded on with “You Never Cared.” This piece, a pop ballad, drew significant inspiration from orchestral strings and the grandeur of musical theater.
This past year, I continued to refine this sound and gain recognition for my interpretations of musical theater repertoire. The visual elements of my music videos are strongly influenced by Disney films and the elegance of princess-inspired aesthetics. My artistry has frequently been described as mystical, cinematic, and reminiscent of an fantastical world.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My role models are Audrey Hepburn, Madison Beer, and Lana Del Rey. I’ve always admired the music of Madison Beer and Lana Del Rey. Their artistry has a magical, fairytale-like quality that transports listeners into another world. This is something I strive to achieve with my own music, a space where people can escape, feel safe, and connect.
As for Audrey Hepburn, she is my ultimate inspiration. Her timeless elegance, kindness, and dedication to her craft are unmatched. Beyond being a fashion icon, she approached her work with grace and used her platform for philanthropy, making an immense impact. Her legacy inspires me to not only pursue excellence in my career but also to give back meaningfully.
