Today we’d like to introduce you to May Yoon.
Hi May, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a permanent makeup artist in Korea. I have enjoyed and everything was great, but I had been losing interest very slowly because of the same work routine everyday. One day I had chance to get a tattoo from tattooist who needed a model for her design. It was known as Korean style which is small and delicate mini tattoos. I got to experience the whole process from the beginning to the end. It was not only interesting but also very professional in many ways. I really liked how tattoo artist creates their own unique style based on their personal background and inspiration. From then, I have searched and met many of tattoo artists in Korea and slowly fell into the world of tattoos.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I was in Korea, living a life as a tattoo artist is not as fair in US. It is very miserable thing to say but tattooing in Korea is still considered as an illegal activity. There are many external difficulties that limit the artists to focus on their job. It has been very tough for me to develop my design and skills since I had to take care of all the external things.
After moving to LA, everything got much better as a tattoo artist. But still, I am facing with one major challenge which is improvement in my style. I face myself everyday to upgrade my skills to be a better artist. But the important thing is that I am enjoying it. It never gets boring.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I believe that improvement cannot be made without confidence. So I try to be proud of my work all the time. My main focus is on botanical and floral designs. I always try to put emotional theme on my design depending on client’s request. It often means all emotions such as memories, love, longing, and more.
