Meet Maximilian Schlossberg of The Max Dog Trainer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maximilian Schlossberg.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Maximilian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became a huge dog lover during my teen years. I had to wear a full-body orthopedic body brace from ages twelve to seventeen. You can imagine what that does to a teenager’s social life. Through that whole time, my two best companions were my Labrador and my German Shephard. It felt as if their only job on the planet was to make sure I wouldn’t get too sad. Cut to…

Five years ago. All the jobs I’d had until that point left me very unfulfilled. So, I thought I’d try one that I would be passionate about. As chance would have it I got hired at ‘I Said Sit’, one of the highest-rated dog schools in Los Angeles. There I was fortunate enough to work under Master dog trainer Jonathan Klein. For the next two years, I trained dogs, sometimes ten hours a day. I very much connected with the training since it was all based on positive reinforcement. As I kept improving I was given the opportunity to teach one-on-one lessons, group lessons and even appeared on national TV as a trainer on Univision’s Despierta America. Before leaving the school Jonathan sponsored me so I could pass a national dog training exam!

Now I spend my days helping people bond and communicate with their dogs through training so they can have an even better relationship and that couldn’t make me happier. I train puppies, older dogs, help rescues find homes, work with aggressive dogs so they can have a better quality of life and everything else you can imagine.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle was starting to get clients on my own. Those wouldn’t come around with the consistency that I wanted. I think that’s something that every new entrepreneur has to deal with. The trick I can share is a combination of patience and delivering results that blow your clients away. As you keep delivering results word will get around. I think people want good professionals to help them solve the problem. Wouldn’t you recommend a pro that delivered results beyond what you could have imagined? Then give it time.

The Max Dog Trainer – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in basic obedience. That is everything that has to do with having your dog at home. The thing I’m the proudest of is the feedback I get from clients. From the reviews, they leave to help me connect with other owners or the text message and videos they send me. It makes my day every time I know I’ve used my time, skill and effort to help someone have that special relationship with their furry best friend.

The two things that set me apart are; one, the incredibly high level of training I was taught. I can see this when I’m someone’s 6th trainer and they still tell me can’t believe their dog is finally learning. And second, I know that I not only have to train the dog I also have to train the person. So I’ve spent countless hours refining how I teach so that the techniques are simple, very effective ones people can actually use them in real life.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
This is such a great question for dog training. Success is helping an owner train the dog they want. I don’t use some generalized version of what a ‘good dog’ is. I usually start working with a client by asking them what they want and what they’d like to change. What are their particular goals for their dog? If you love your dog on your couch why would be stop that? If sit is not important to you let’s not spend time on it. Let me show you how to get the behaviors you want from your dog in a loving, positive reinforcement way.
