Meet Max Weirauch of CreativeMexx in Claremont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Weirauch.

Max, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I Design Excellency at CREATIVEMEXX.com. I was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in January of 2017. Since I am living in California my interest in design and art has skyrocketed!

Especially with my relocation to the Greater Los Angeles Area in 2018 I have learned what it means to being surrounded by a vivid, creative, and encouraging community. I have not experienced this before to this extent. And I’m absolutely loving it! As I said, I’ve always been into photography, design, and art in general. However, before I moved to Southern California I considered my talent as a hobby. Meanwhile with living in LA, many friends started to reaching out to me seeking my talent and help – and after some time their friends connected with me as well and started to offer money for my designs.

It was the natural next step to pursue my talent professionally and to start my own side-business. I remodeled my website, creativemexx.com, and am since Designing Excellency for individuals, start-ups, and corporates to create distinguishable websites, marketing materials, photographies, and brand identities. I recently helped a talented friend of mine, Tatum Lenberg, who is an amazing director, writer, and filmmaker located in Orange County to publish her website. You can check it out here: TatumLenberg.com. I met her over a common friend of ours, Ethan Paisley. Ethan was recently featured on VoyageLA, https://voyagela.com/interview/meet-ethan-paisley-paisley-creative-co-west-hollywood/. I worked together with Ethan and his company Paisley Creative Co for the past months where I designed the company’s logo. I loved working together with both of them as they came up with great initial ideas and lots of creativity!

Most of my freelance jobs are through word-of-mouth. I become friends with many clients after a completed project. They loved working with me and so let their friends know. Easy as that. Do good work. This summer, I am working on two websites, and am helping to rebrand an international tech company.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d lie if I’d say that it always been a smooth road. At least for me personally there have been challenges at times. Business-wise; I luckily never felt pressured or was concerned with my work. CreativeMexx started as something I loved to do, and it hasn’t changed since. I actually launched the first version of my website, creativemexx.com, when I was 12 years old! Just to share some pictures at the time. Since then I am bringing my German virtues to the workspace: Deliver on-time and beyond good – Design Excellency! With success: Whenever a potential client expresses doubt, I share a contact list with people I’ve worked within the past. The potential client can then choose who she/he wants to contact and ask about their experience working with me. In 99% of the time, the potential client comes back next week and is eager to work together with me and can’t wait to start asap.

Anyways, coming back to the question. Yes, I’ve definitely had struggles, especially my language barrier made it tough in the beginning to get traction in the US. In addition, I still miss my German friends from time to time. However, a fun night with my people from LA following a good beach day in Venice Beach / Santa Monica makes me feel grateful and happy in this beautiful city. And motivates me to work! Overall, I’ve had challenges and struggles, but wouldn’t change anything if I could travel back in time!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CreativeMexx – what should we know?
Design Excellency! That’s the motto and tagline of my company, CreativeMexx. We help individuals, start-ups, and corporates with anything they creatively may need help with. We usually help with website designs, logo studies, marketing materials, social media channels, app designs (UI/UE), photographies and graphics/illustrations. My goal is to make my artworks memorable and clear to the audience. Convey a message as simple as possible. When you check out my website you notice that it is kept very simple – without any of the generic promises and bla bla you see at most design companies. This is intentional. My artworks hook people and they reach out to me. A first meeting / getting-to-know each other is, of course, always free. We then can talk about generic contracts and promises! At my website, I want to hook people with good designs!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Communication is key! To me, it feels like that creatives love working together with me because I don’t overcomplicate (which is partly because English is my second language lol). I focus on what I am good at and try to not pretend anything I can’t do. I offer a service and people like my work. Simple as that. No overpromising. No disappointments.

Here, my German accent and virtues come in handy. In Germany, everybody is straightforward. This straightforwardness-virtue, combined with my accent makes people communicate better what they want and are looking for. No discussion over useless terms, which actually nobody understands anyways. Simple language – straightforward. Simplicity is key. If you can say it in 2 sentences, no need to write an entire paragraph. Keep your sentence and message easy and short. People are busy. The artwork (website, marketing material, or anything else) has a limited time and needs to speak for itself to the audience. It needs to convey its message right away. Design with intention, and with thought. Or Design Excellency!
