Meet Max Hellmann of Family Industries in Chinatown and Lincoln Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Hellmann.

Max, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Family Industries’ beginning took place in the run down back carriage house of Max’s house in Echo Park. Each night after we finished our 9 to 5 jobs, we would head to the cramped space to print shirts for our small list of local clients. Even though the conditions were less than ideal (lead paint on the walls, power coming from extension cords running across the back lawn to our equipment), it didn’t stop Family Industries from branching out through hard work and eventually printing for a host of Los Angeles based clients.

It was a long growth process, but we have grown from that small shed into a full 10,000 sq. foot production facility. Our staff has gone from the 2 of us to 25 full-time staff and another 25 part-time staff!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been relatively smooth but filled with a lot of hard work and innovation throughout the years. We make our business very customer service driven. Our industry relies on word of mouth, and having a good reputation is very important.

The struggle comes from the growth of the business and reorganizing our in-house operations and structure as we continue to grow.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Family Industries – what should we know?
Family Industries is essentially two companies under one roof. The great thing is that both complement each other.

The first half is a full-service print shop. We print, embroider, and decorate millions of shirts and items each year in our Los Angeles location. We print for agencies, clothing labels, schools, and various entities. Our team is approachable, easy to work with, and will always go the extra mile to ensure the printing process is seamless and easy from start to finish.

The second half is our live printing business (live screen printing and on-site sublimation). We offer our services are a marketing arm for brands and agencies who want to offer customized experiential marketing to event attendees. Live printed custom apparel and branded items is a huge way for the brands to connect with consumers on-site at each event. On-site we can customize anything from shirts to coffee mugs to festival flags. We have grown to be the largest on-site print team in the entire world and have hubs and staff in LA, SF, Portland, Austin, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, and NYC.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Our entire staff is amazing. Everyone comes to work ready to go every single day. They deserve all of the credit. Anyone who has worked with us can attest to the level of attention that our staff gives to every client.
