Today we’d like to introduce you to Maury Cruz
Maury, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born on June 16, 1994, in the city of Las Tunas, Cuba, shortly after the country left the special period… When I was only 3 years old, my grandfather discovered that I had musical interests and dared to make me a small guitar that he gave me as a gift to see how much I was interested in music. At the age of 5 I started my private piano lessons with Professor Deysi, from whom I received one or two lessons a week because at that time I lived very far from the city, in a small town called Las Parras, a municipality belonging to the province of Las Tunas full of very humble people and where on every corner you found music for being a happy place full of good vibes. I grew up watching my whole family fill my veins with Cuban music and all its traditions, and I can’t ignore that I was influenced by my grandfather, who was Galician originally from Spain! I spent two consecutive years rigorously preparing for the aptitude tests called to enter the Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo Vocational School of Art, El Cucalambé of my province, it was easy for me to pass since I had dedicated myself to studying to enter it in the specialty of piano, but along the way a problem arose or I would say rather a blessing… because they were not accepting more pianists that year and they made me the proposal to study as a professional violinist.
The school
I started my violin career in September 2001 at the aforementioned school, but really without a violin (it was a bit difficult but fun) because by then only the children of really important people were given a violin in school and the other reason is that the government didn’t have the funds to buy them.
I got my first violin thanks to Uncle Zayas, an excellent friend of my dad’s who brought it to me from Germany. I already had my own violin, a blessing, my second violin, I received it at the age of 13 from my aunt Martha Mulet, who had brought it to me as a gift from the beautiful city of Miami… since it was the first generation of my family to come to the United States.
As part of the program of subjects I received in the art school are: History of universal and national music, music theory, music appreciation, music theory, complementary piano, violin, choral conducting and Cuban music, really a world full of musical knowledge and a great experience and important development in my career, I forged bonds of friendship for life with my brothers musicians of the old school. I finished my studies at that great school, in 2009
All those years were very important for the formation of my musical ear or as we say, to further develop what we call absolute tone. I was never one of those who liked to follow the rules and I was always interrupting classical music classes with popular music taking the piano and singing songs like *EL Cuarto de Tula* songs that I knew because I practiced at home when the power went out in the whole neighborhood and all the families went out to the balcony of their houses to listen to how a child who was barely 7 years old gave his concerts without lights in his house. I have to confess that I was passionate about this… to have hundreds of people from their homes enjoying my music…
¡I had the opportunity to play with the popular flamenco fusion music group Rioja!! Where I knew a lot about Spanish music and nice to open a little more my vision of the music created outside the classical bases already studied in school.
Thanks to Rioja I had the pleasure of connecting and meeting Pablo Milanés and Raúl Torres, as well as Diana Fuentes, outstanding figures of music in my country of origin, Cuba)
Then I agreed to play for, another small group that I called PsiKiss because it was based on music for love and experiences and the name was the combination of the psychology of kissing… it made metaphorical sense!! (I love the metaphor) I was there for a few years and my mother, seeing that I had more potential, sold me the idea (she always told me that if I studied the money would not be lacking and it would work, to do other things.
At the age of 17 and I decided to study Intermediate Technician in Metal Forming at the Industrial Polytechnic Institute of 11th year. Las Tunas Festival, where I learned many things about this industry, especially what has to do with metals (stamping, technical drawing, metal casting, metal technology, where I got to work in the ACINOX company in all its industrial areas!! Not excluding the fact that there was an institution called FEEM (dedicated to the monitoring and ordering of students) in which I was given the position of “head of Culture and Dissemination” of 3 special polytechnic schools, I was dedicated to organizing events with artists and teaching classes on universal politics. I finished with 100 points and certificates as an exceptional student during those 2 and a half years culminating studies on December 14, 2014. At the same time, for two consecutive years while I was studying at the polytechnic, my mother instilled in me again the idea of improving myself and I began to investigate what I liked and decided to study the career of chef at the Culinary Association of Las Tunas (FACRC) with grilled specialties with Professor Castillo and sauces with Kiara, in addition to the career of bartender. A place where we did cooking workshops, book studies and international food studies!! It was an excellent experience as I got to work and intern at the ranch with Chef Recaman!! I already had two more professions in my life in my hand and I had only 4 and with the best scores in all of these!!
I remember that for that season at night all the young people attended a place called “La Pista Joven” where it was full of young people and there were battles of all kinds of Tectonick break dancing, varied dance styles and from various cultures, I also loved rivalry and always testing my versatility in those battles while dancing.
After spending 2 years, my parents Mauricio Cruz and Yunia Hechavarria Mulet, always raised me under the rules that if I studied they would give me everything and if that was not the case, then I had to contribute to the house (and I tried, but I realized that it was better to study than to work, or make my life somewhere else, What was smart and I decided to continue studying was when the compulsory army took me and another stage of my life began.
El Ejército
It was two years in which I learned to eat any food, it was where I learned to be strong under adversity and well, I had it a little easier, since due to my skills as a musician I was able to make use of them and spend a lot of time with a group of amateur artists who trained to compete among the army bases. We got first year, first place, and second year, second place. My assignments at that time were Sapper (people who defuse bombs) and anti-aircraft) they gave me the discharge from the army and when it ended, I never agreed very much with that military regime, because there are two years of life that young Cubans lose time and the ability to improve themselves in other things or professions, but it makes you strong, let’s see the positive side always), they did not give me the opportunity to enter the first in Order 18 (Encouragement that is given to a soldier to study to enter Cuban universities) but I made some calls of why and it was revalued and they gave me access to study in Melanio 3 together with pre university students … Let’s remember that I never liked to follow the rules and by then I didn’t I agreed with some things that affected even my life as artists and decided to go study with private teachers!! Almost for a year in a row I was studying the three subjects of Mathematics, History of Cuba and Spanish Literature !! to take the entrance exams to higher education and the entrance exams arrived!! With that stage already expired and the university in my hands I decide to start studying Java programming, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, pure calculus 1 from home, with the aim of reaching advanced university !! And so it was: on that vacation I was only studying computer engineering!!
The University
I chose to go to the capital to try my luck in life as a musician, but with the aim of graduating as a computer engineer at the University of Computer Science called (UCI), a university that they said was for Fidel’s children. At that time, I didn’t have a violin because I had sold it to drink beer since I had finished my studies and in college what I found for the first time to get music was a piano at the Wilfredo Lam Center of the same university and I made my first college performance as a pianist in front of thousands of students! I also incorporated the guitar to attend more cultural events at the university… this was contributing to being the most popular in student integrity! Amateur artist festivals are coming, which consist of the cultural development of university students (all faculties fight each other to win the gold awards and award points to their faculty students… This was my peak moment at the university, since in all the presentations I obtained gold and decorations at the provincial level and everyone wanted me to play for their faculties and that is what I did. In these battles there was a person who approached me and offered me the offer to work in a mariachi group.
Daniel Enrique, who is the current director of the mariachi group Nueva Era (Created at the same university)… it was where I made many contacts until I came to work for the president of Cuba seeing how they took away all our communications and they had all kinds of food and drinks and it was where it hurt me to know that I was in a place full of everything and part of my people punished with their same laws, since eating beef in Cuba is very unitable for 22 years and they were with a Buffalo and The point of this is that I decided that I wasn’t going to work for these kinds of people and I decided that I didn’t want to be in my country for a long time until this whole political thing changed, although I’ve never really cared about them, but the hunger for my people does… this meant having more reliability since I was working for the president and for the so-called Heroes of the Republic, minds full of somewhat old ideas that I did not share in their conversations… I worked as a mariachi for El torreo de 1830 in Havana for 2 and a half years… I was at private and public events with ambassadors from other countries and with countries that had students in Cuba! After 3 years of mariachi, we decided that JOCHI Y MANUEL (MIS MEJORES AMIGOS EN LA HABANA) would quit the mariachi group and that each one would take their own path in their careers as independent soloists. I chose the most popular genres and looked for a way to incorporate the new generations and create, together with Annie and Alejandro, their own foundation called “Connected With” with the idea of reaching rural areas and reaching schools with special children and trying to give free classes to young children through my own means, or adults, the idea was to promote art and give possibilities and create dreams!
Covid arrives and by then my cousin Leyza, recent owner of a bar called ILUMINATY, decides to support my career and I got my first professional photos, I would never forget such a gift!
Everything had to close due to the anti v=covid measures and my friend Rosmary (violinist) offered me to go to a humble village called Alkizar, there I started working in the fields with the peasants because there was no work for artists and I was in those conditions for 4 consecutive months, getting up at 3 a.m. and when I finished I played some violin in the house that my friend Robmary gave me and then I went to a pastor’s house to make pizza and it was over at 9 p.m., when I had a little money I went to get ready at the best barbershop in the place, I took my violin and won people over making a living on Facebook saying that there was a violinist in town at that time, I began to make a lot of contacts and people and I began to contact to play at their houses was where I met Emilio, a friend of the village doctor and by then Emilio and I agreed to make my first video clip which is a cover of thousands of years dedicated to the life I had had in the countryside and the video was made in the same … Emilio knew some artists and we started to form a group with the intention of growing when Cuba no longer had restrictive measures due to COVID
I move to Las Tunas, thanks excellent friend called Milagros who I met through the mariachis who helped me solve the ticket to return to Las Tunas and that is when the stage arrives where I begin to try to make contacts knocking on the doors of the people of the show business in Las Tunas and by then many years had already passed and no one knew who I was !! I offered my talent as gifts to everyone and no one wanted except a few good friends!! called, Denis ,Dj Galiano and Daniel the Director of Amerik rekork … and it all happened when I was fighting with Denis and I asked him if he dared to make a video with me and he accepted that, I loved it because he was one of the best and all his followers were going to know me (my countrymen)
That night we met with just not-so-good cell phones and decided to record all the sounds of a barber’s tools and with those sounds masterizsmls and turned them into music for me. violin song and video is called Unlinkely by Maury C ft DJ Galiano ,
Denis the barber and the model together with the help of my sister Massiel, Julio, Alejandro, Annie and Daniel this video was made in the location of “El Cornitos” (a beautiful place in Las Tunas, Cuba where the Cucalambean days are held every year)
When the video comes to light, we schedule a good section of professional photos for some magazines and interviews, I call a friend from the radio, Abel from an interview on the radio of Las Tunas and the opportunity to make my song known. On all the stations and with Magdiel my friend the interview of the local television channel (“Tunas Visión”) was made and I reconnect again with Martín my friend in Los Angeles, California and decides to give me a boost to my career by giving it relevance by a press tour at an international level just this to start … where I was interviewed in WebOn Mañana Mix ( Honduras ) , Buenos días mi gente (Honduras ) , the pink banana ( Mexico ) TeleProgreso ( honduras ) ,
This video and song attracted many views and especially people willing to invest in my art just for the pleasure of being able to listen to me and feel the music.
We prepared everything for the second video the following month and I wanted to make it more exclusive and give it a new meaning!! It was where I contacted to collaborate with the dancer Lili la Rosa and she served to create the Story (Surgere by MauryC ft Galiano fit Lili la Rosa) that we had created – (Surgere is a song and video inspired by people who have that talent but do not exploit it out of fear or lack of opportunities, it is a video focused on how music can change your frustrations and take you to a magical level!!
They were two resounding successes in my country, and they gave me the offer to return to Havana because they wanted me there with them working and I agreed and that was where I moved and started with the project for a series for children on the CubaVision channel, By then my other two best friends will and Nelson invited me to fight with the Cuban show business stylist “Donde Dorian” where I met Héctor Villar Héctor Villar (commentator of the television channel Tele Rebelde (Sports Channel) and Heidy Robaina, decides to offer me work in her Bar “Casa Robaina” in San Antoninde los Baños Cuba. I cannot deny that by then all those years of sacrifice in the capital were beginning to bear fruit, Thanks to these connections I was able to collaborate and work in the Cuban TV channel CubaNational and international vision with David Álvarez in an advertising spot that came out after each Cuban TV program, television channel Half a Day on TV with David Álvarez, work at the Casa Robaina Bar, LM Bar, VS Bar, La Concordia restaurant, La Fela Restaurant with the humorist Chacón, Great Bellas Caribbean event with my friend Jordi Matos and the entire cast of the Bellas Caribbean Cosmetology school, creation of Mi ex negocio Bar MCLuna, Skyline restaurant, El FLORIDITA, Bar El tocororo with David Álvarez and Ariel Mastrapa, Cristal Bar, ICRT, all these achievements were in the capital, when I decided to move and after a few years working, I decided to move to the United States by a not very safe route, and I decided to undertake my trip to the United States looking to expand my culture and above all my vision as an international artist… My dreams ( To be famous to be able to help fulfill dreams of children and young people and adults.
Crossing to the United States
I flew to Nicaragua on May 4, 2022 we were all scared because we were a group of Cubans (10) we stayed in a hostel and there we stayed for a few hours which was where we met our Cuban travel friends too, that same night with no time to lose we left for Honduras and at about 2 am in the morning they rode us on horses guided by professional riders, since the sum of 24000 dollars was being paid for the security of this trip, that night it was all very dark and the mud was at the level of the horses’ shoulders, that was not worrying, but it was clear to me that it would be dangerous because of the rivalry of the cartels and human trafficking… Crossing the border Nicaragua Honduras already in Honduras when we got off the horses we had to walk through the mountains and a guide all holding hands since we were in the jungle … We arrived after 3 hours of walking without knowing where we were going, we arrived at an abandoned house and there we were for about 40 minutes until a man arrived shouting that we would get up quickly, that emigration was coming and all full of mud we desperately got into that car 12 people .. quickly accelerated and we sped off to a place in Honduras where we were given a room for a day until we could move to Guatemala, it was where I had to climb mountains and help my team to be able to climb… since my physical and mental preparation was already ready for this circumstance (I ran 8 km a day in Cuba) I was present as they betrayed Haitians and that was sad.. how they kidnapped people!! It was really very hard for me all this and I was very afraid but I never left in doubt to give my life for my fellow travelers, since the owner of the cartel appointed me At that time the leader of the team of the 10 Cubans and they all followed my orders (my Cuban fellow travelers) in Guatemala there came a critical moment where all the emigrants were going in escorted caravans and by then we were coming something Late because of the route bought by the owners of the cartel and because we were late they began to chase us and a car that was in front of me, it was where the rural guard of Guatemala chased us and we hid in a mountain until a man betrayed us and we proceeded to a search of documents and they took 100 dollars from each of us, even the driver we had to pay … and if we did, the payment would take us to prisoners and deportees!! They let us go and then the head of the route called the driver and told him that that money had to be returned to us and that he had to pay it to him (I think he was talking about killing him for his mistake because it was clear that he was very afraid) in Guatemala I had the experience of sailing in boats on its beautiful rivers and meeting good people who always gave us some food and hygiene .. I have no complaints about any process because I can assure you that they were treated like kings !! Arriving at the Guatemala – Mexico border the next day we undertook the next caravan of cars, then we had to ride a harrow in the front, we were 21 people for a few long hours without being able to relieve ourselves or eat or anything, it was just to be calm and wait for the next step to reach Mexico City DF escorted by the police and the cartel, I remember that before arriving in Mexico City we changed cars twice and between them we reached a zero with more than 3000 emigrants from all over Latin America and it was where I saw that everything was a very organized movement since the posters were there and we had a tattoo, a name by obligation on the right arm that brought a key to follow the process … I had 25000 dollars in a wallet to give to our next coyote or guide already in DF I looked for a way for my companions to always eat well and to prepare us for the next hard and important step that was to cross the Rio Grande !! After 3 days in Mexico City they put us on a harrow with 150 people in the back, all hermetically sealed to prevent the police from becoming suspicious and it was like this for 11 long hours locked up all women, children, and I remember how they encouraged us that if we made noise they would kill someone and they did not let anyone drink water because the water bottles sounded and that could alarm the retainer or stalls of border registration, we arrived in Monterrey and there I decided to trust the chief of the area and it was a moment of relief because only the Rio Grande was waiting for us! After 4 days of being in that house with all the comforts… We left for the river That afternoon we had to hide among the grass of the border helicopters since we were 300 people to cross in just a few minutes … which we had to wait for the river level to drop because it was very high… I remember a child alone with his mother crying and I gave him my life jacket and I felt that I was doing the right thing and that blessings would come to me. We crossed the river and as a winner I was the first to reach the other bank, it was when I started to help people cross and touch American soil!! We were stopped by the United States border and they made lines differently divided by nationalities!! They transferred us to the border and there I was for 2 days in a place called La Hielera (rooms at very low temperatures)
United States!!
I arrived in Texas and took a flight to Tampa Florida because it was the place where they were going to receive me for a while without paying rent!! Aunt Enis was an excellent aunt and she supported me even though I was not her blood nephew, I looked for a job as a gardener and alone and had one.. then I went to work at a Yonker where I was paid at 5.50 an hour and had to travel by bicycle for 30 minutes. I contact my cousin Lili in Miami, daughter of aunt Marita (the woman who has helped my family for years) and I tell her that I want to work as a musician and she tells me that she is going to move some contacts and that is where I do the casting Giselle band and which they accepted me !! Everything was perfect until the relationship with the one I had come to this country with from one moment another changed everything and we decided to break up and under those circumstances everything was worse since his brother helped that commitment process with my ex-girlfriend to break down.. I slept in the yard of the house just so as not to look for trouble and avoid being turned away as I had nowhere to go!! And for that morning aunt Enis I remember that she saw me and was very upset with my ex for what happened !! They know that I cleaned every morning and was always trying to find a way to show my gratitude for the generosity of having me in their house without saying that the government aid was always to contribute to the places where I arrived!! I go out with only 11 dollars and my 2 violins, a great faith in God, my guide and not afraid to undertake… that’s when I call Daniela and she welcomes me into her house with her ex-boyfriend modest Excellent friend !! It was terrible for me and I felt very alone and aimless, but I trusted that everything would be better!! It was when a client of the mariachi group Nueva será called him and told me that he needed my violin because he was just born his grandson and I wanted to give him some songs … I told him yes and when I finished playing for this beautiful family that I also love they asked me how much they should pay me and I told them that I could not charge someone who gave me his hand in Cuba and that the blessings for that newborn baby went for me… arriving at Daniela’s house, Diané calls me and tells me to check inside the violin house and they had hidden 300 dollars as a gift from me, the money I needed exactly to pay for my first legal process in this country!! And so it was!! Call La Chispas Multiservices LLC Immigration Processing Company Excellence! (Highly recommended) the owner of the company Mari knew everything that had happened and had a lot of consideration for me, at Daniela’s house at the hours of being on my third day aunt Maritza called me that I was going to travel to Miami and if I wanted to go with her, and I accepted since my cousin Helen (aunt Martha’s daughter, My grandmother’s sister) agreed to make it a Season for her house under the rules of attending church every Sunday and not saying bad words at home!! I move to Miami.
Miami
In Miami my cousin, risking being kicked out of the rent, took me into the room of her two children and there I slept in a children’s bed with humility and happiness that was in a home !! They spent two months trying to look for a job and they wouldn’t accept me because I didn’t have legal papers and that’s where at an adult retreat of my cousin Helen’s husband’s grandmother I met Hilda Orta Sister of the Famous Writer and producer and winner of a golden globe -Netflix series ( Bety la Fea ) Silvio Orta
Hilda was at the tables next door and I started dancing and playing violin with the children of Hilda Orta’s foundation (special children) and I have come in touch where I tell you in that part my story, Hilda was the first person who gave me clothes to wear, her brother’s mobile, I work in the foundations and we sowed that seed of brotherhood for life !! We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“I am convinced that reaching life’s opportunities and God’s blessings requires facing obstacles and overcoming many trials. That’s why I tell the story of my life with immense pride, addressing the new generations with the hope of inspiring them to always follow their dreams. Each challenge overcome and each triumph achieved are testament to the fact that no goal is impossible when pursued with passion and determination.”
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional DJ violinist and universal music producer. My specialty lies in touching souls and hearts with my virtuoso violin and piano, while performing mesmerizing dances and masterfully controlling my DJ mixer. It’s truly astounding! Combining three shows in one is my hallmark, and being versatile and devotedly loyal to my audience is my greatest commitment. What truly sets me apart is my complete dedication, where I pour my soul into every note, yearning for the most enthusiastic applause and the most generous blessings. Being Cuban grants me a unique singularity; the salsa and rumba that flow through my veins are infused with the fiery and enchanting essence of sugar. Every performance is an emotional journey and a vibrant celebration of life and music.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I have the firm dream of creating schools for people who want to soar within the realm of art and discover how art can transform lives. I am committed to helping children from Cuba and around the world. Upon reaching the pinnacle of success, my unwavering goal is to build an empire of opportunities alongside my wife, and be known as Maury C, the Violinist of Los Angeles.
