Meet Matthew Murawski of Goodstein Wealth Management in Encino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Murawski.

Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Almost 14 years ago, I packed up my Dodge Neon with $300 in my pocket and headed to Marin County in the bay area. I knew my opportunity was in California, I just hadn’t figured it out what it was going to be yet.

The short of it is that I broke my collar bone on my bike and wound up answering phones speaking to investors, entrepreneurs, and angel investors about small cap stocks. I had always had a chip on my shoulders with big banks even before the financial crisis because my parents were given terrible advice regarding investments and college planning. This also came from one of the very banks that helped collapse the global financial system in 2008 and still stands today.

I’ve lived in Los Angeles almost a decade where I’m a fiduciary fee only financial planner at Goodstein Wealth Management in Encino. I absolutely love what I get to do everyday from college planning to retirement & estate planning and everything that falls in the cracks in between. In the last two years, I’ve had fun putting out a weekly update video @plannersedge on Instagram. I was nervous at first, but have enjoyed the challenge of it all.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a road very unlike my peers I can say for certain. At 22 years old, I was making great money in the markets and at the firm I worked for. In the time between joining Alan at Goodstein Wealth, I had some very tough years of struggling not only financially, but more so as a man trying to find out what’s next? Facing the unknown is the toughest part. There was a good batch of years that sucked majorly, but the success that followed has made it so rewarding.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Goodstein Wealth Management story. Tell us more about the business.
We don’t charge clients for college planning. That’s what I’m most proud of. I’m a fee only fiduciary financial planner in LA. I’m known for making complex investment ideas and strategies, digestible for just about anyone. I do love beautiful suits, but the experience working with me is far from pretentious. Being a fiduciary is important so that legally you have someone who has to put the clients best interest in front of their own at all times and disclose conflicts of interest. Call me old fashioned, but if you’re not working with a fee only fiduciary advisor by 2019, then it’s time to catch up.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve learned that we attract what and who we are. I don’t know much about luck, but I do believe in momentum and energy. There have been times where everything has gone perfectly right and everything just seems to fall in place and then there have been time where I’ve experienced just the opposite. At the end of the day, being happy where I am, yet excited about where I’m going has been the takeaway.
