Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Meddock.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a brand/idea guy. Southern California living is my life. Surfing, skating, or hitting the local mountains is my regular.
With that being said, I dabbled in various business in the past, from night club promotions all the way to being a full-time paramedic.
As I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I knew I wanted to do something that no one else had done before. After getting out of the water one day, I realized that there was no “So Cal” sandwich concept like there was with other types of foods. Sandwiches historically have been an east coast food type, and I felt like that needed to change. I wanted to build a brand for me and for people like me.
Sessions West Coast Deli was formed. I partnered with local influencers as investors and also a few professional athletes, Chet Thomas, Greg Lutzka, and Zach Osborne. Our mission is to grow our brand and continue to create memorable experiences for our customers through lifestyle, food, and drinks.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had never been in the restaurant industry before other than slanging drinks to people at nightclubs.
This business is BRUTAL, and I would not recommend it for everyone. The highs are extreme and so are the lows. You need to be able to get good at a million things, rather than focusing on only a few skills like you might in other professions.
Sessions West Coast Deli – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We talk the talk and we walk the walk. Our staff practices what we preach. We are aggressively plowing our own lane in the Southern California restaurant space.
I’m proud to keep our brand a locally owned, and locally supported real brand that is respected in the culinary world, and in our neighborhoods.
I think this is what sets us apart. We take chances, and we don’t create things to appease anyone but ourselves.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment of my career was taking a high school dropout from dropping out of school to graduating, to scholarship to the Institute of America, and now working at some of the most prestigious restaurants in the world.
I also cried when one of my staff members bought her first car. That was a proud moment for me.
Although my main goal is to provide a life for my family, a close second is helping provide a life for everyone involved with Sessions.
