Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Brown.
Hi Matt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was fascinated with the camera as a young boy. All I ever wanted to do was take photos. I worked at the school newspaper and yearbook. After high school, I went to Brooks school of photography and worked with some of the best photographers in the business. I worked at the OC Register for a few years and moved on to Sports Illustrated magazine, then ESPN the Magazine. I’ve directed 13 documentary films and wrote movie scripts with my writing partner Phil Thurman. Starting in 2013, I worked for LA Angels as the Director of Photography for four seasons. I started a podcast Just a Good Conversation three years ago. My guests range from Hall of Fame Basketball players Oscar & Emmys winners and the Pulitzer Prize. Currently, I work at California State University, Dominguez Hills as the University Photographer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obstacles and challenges are always a part of a creative life. I had to work hard to find and hold onto freelance clients over the years. Pushing yourself as a creative is one of the most difficult things to do during your career. I was always working to learn new things and push my photographic boundaries.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m well known for my sports documentary work. I enjoy spending time with my subjects and making interesting photos. I’m most proud of my ability to form a relationship with my subjects. It helps set them at ease and allows you to capture powerful images.
