Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Sabo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, and still live and work here as a visual artist. I received my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in sculpture two years ago from UNLV and continue to make work. I work in a multitude of media, from drawing and painting to ceramics, sculpture and installation. I currently work in a prop studio, where I fabricate props and other scenic elements for clients from all around the country. Finding ways to incorporate the ways I use my skills for profit and trying to merge that with my own creative practice has been an interesting journey.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s always challenging trying to stay motivated and to make work for yourself while figuring out how to make ends meet. I’ve been lucky enough to find creative jobs that allow me to work with my hands, learn new techniques and work with new materials. It’s been important for me to learn how to balance work and my own art practice, and to let them each influence the other in a positive way instead of getting stressed and overwhelmed.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
My work these days mainly consists of sculpture and installations, at any scale. Currently, I’m working on a series of miniatures. My sculptural work has really evolved over the years, from mostly small scale ceramic works to working with a variety of sculptural materials. I use many different mediums but I have come to consider myself mainly an object maker. I love making functional objects, but at the same time, I love playing with more surreal art objects.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think being receptive to growth and change has made me successful in what I do. Additionally, it has been crucial for me to be receptive to collaboration with other artists and creators in my community.
