Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Jurek.
Mary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Creative work has always been a driving passion of my life. Since early childhood I was recognized for my strong drawing skills and innate artistic talent. By college years it was clear I would pursue a degree in fine art, specializing in sculpting and oil painting. My father was a mid-century modernist architect and our home was filled with notable classic designs from that era which I still admire. From him I garnered a love of design and a critical eye for detail.
My early career in New York City blended my diverse creative interests to finding work in the diamond industry as a goldsmith and later, designer of precious jewelry. I developed collections for the most prestigious jewelry firms and won 4 international diamond awards. Among them is Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Piaget Watch, Gubelin of Switzerland and Gump’s of San Francisco. Collaborating with respected artisans of that caliber continues to influence my work.
Using my past experience to guide me, I established my tableware company in 1998. Unwavering guidelines were established- use only the best metal, everything made by hand and lastly, preserve the environment. I scouted through SE Asia in search of craftsmen for one year. \ What evolved was our first hammered stainless-steel collection created by female-owned factories in an economically underdeveloped area of Thailand. With them we made social impact through work. In return, our luxury tableware for the American market was launched. The designs were classic modern with an organic flare. They continue to be our best sellers after 19 years.
Our business has expanded, working with more than 10 family-owned factories, many in Northern India. We value our relationship with all artisans and respect their skills. Our collection continues to grow and our collections are sold in more than 200 fines stores in the USA, Canada and Europe.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being an entrepreneur is never a smooth road because decision-making and managing risks are on your shoulders every day. You are the leader of your company and responsibility falls at your feet. Good team members are a major asset and finding the right people is vital to success.
The major struggles we have faced over the years have been outside of our control. One year devastating floods destroyed every factory we work with in Thailand. Most of the country was under water for over 6 weeks and companies of all sizes were effected. Fortunately, there was no loss of human life and our customers were notified immediately. Production for us stopped completely because we could not deliver customer orders. The determination and resilience of our workers was inspiring. They rebuilt within 8 months and work in the villages resumed.
I view the daily challenges as ongoing learning experience. The rewards come in several forms, all of which are part of personal development. As a small business owner, I describe my role as one of maintaining good balance and passion.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mary Jurek Design, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
Our dedication to create very fine tableware products for everyday use defines our mission. During my early career, I worked time-honored companies that never compromised on quality or craftsmanship. They believed the customer always deserved the best. We continue that mantra.
It is that type of pride that drives our business and sustains our commitment to good design and handcrafted products. Our designs are clean, approachable and modern. We create trays, bowls and pitchers which are beautiful for a formal table and comfortable for everyday casual lifestyle. Our polish is more lustrous than other brands, and the weight of our products distinguishes us as affordable luxury.
What most customers like about our collection is that our stainless steel goes into the dishwasher. Easy to care for and easy clean up.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The good luck of our business came in the form of early-on practical decisions, that is, using good materials that are sustainable. Our brand is authentic and true to itself. We are a handmade stainless-steel company and true advocates of the metal. Stainless steel addresses all the social and environmental demands of consumers today and those requirements are built into our products. We offer value, style and durability to our customers.
