Meet Mary Goodell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Goodell.

Mary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am an advertising marketing director who used yoga and meditation to hone my concentration and stress management skills while working in the fast-paced world of advertising.  While I was very successful and worked with many Fortune 500 clients, I was once told I did not look stressed out enough while working in the corporate world.  I believe that being mindful, calm and successful at the same time should be everyone’s goal.

Over the past several years, I completed certifications in areas that are my passions: Yoga (YogaWorks 500 trained e-RYT, registered with Yoga Alliance), Meditation (trained at Unplug Meditation with davidji), Rest and Renew® (restorative yoga) with Judith Hanson Lasater, Yoga Tune Up® with Jill Miller and Urban Zen Integrative Therapy,

I currently teach Hatha at the Westchester Family YMCA as well as Urban Zen Integrative Therapy at YogaWorks Hollywood and Woodland Hills. I’m also an expert in aromatherapy and a Reiki Master. I have a naturally calming demeanor and help people dealing with stress, anxiety and other issues. I travel throughout the Los Angeles area, but am based closest to West LA.

Offerings:
I offer group, semi-private and private sessions for yoga or meditation in studio, home or office. I also offer Urban Zen Integrative Therapy or Reiki sessions and Attunement.  Lastly, I am skilled in Aroma Therapy and am available for training in this as well as an Essential Oils Distributor.

Has it been a smooth road?
This is a second career for me, and at times it has been very competitive. While I don’t fit the stereotype of a yoga instructor, I’m actually highly skilled and was able to train with a hand picked group of wonderful teachers who have taught me well. I am grateful for my teachers as well as my students of all ages who are loyal to me and my classes. I have a diverse group of students ranging in age from 20s to 80s.

I teach flow to semi-private groups in the Playa Vista area, Hatha to a 50+ skewing group at the Westchester Family YMCA and my Restorative Yoga/Urban Zen Integrative Therapy classes which attract students of all ages at YogaWorks Hollywood and Woodland Hills. I’d love to add some additional classes closer to my Marina del Rey home as well as some corporate meditation clients.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am known for my calm, caring demeanor, and I always leave my students in a better place then when the class began.   One of my favorite reviews read “Entered the class feeling distracted and stressed, left the class feeling at ease and happy”.  I am grateful to be able to make a positive impact on the lives of so many.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As an industry, yoga and meditation is merging to create a more holistic approach to wellness while incorporating other beneficial modalities… less focus on the physical and more on the entire benefits of the yoga/mindfulness practice.  I look forward to expanding my offerings, and hope to secure more corporate clients.  I am especially interested in using my meditation training to help people in corporate America learn to manage stress and create a more balanced life and office environment.  I am doing what I can to help create a more mindful and balanced world.
