Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Velasco.
Marvin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved to draw but never thought I could get any good or could make any money. After seeing some of the art being placed here in LA, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to try because there was so much of it everywhere. I started out drawing on shipping labels, then started to expand to stickers, shirts, and am currently working on a magazine of my work. Now my art actually brings me regular income which is the craziest thing of it all.
Has it been a smooth road?
It never is a smooth road. People are always quick to doubt you and your potential. It is up to you to get yourself to work on your passion every day if thats what you really want.
Early on it was hard to believe in myself because I never went to art school, and didn’t have a story to share yet. When you tell people your an artist here in this city you’re usually met with a shrug and an “oh that’s cool” it can be very discouraging after months of the same thing.
It stopped bothering me so much after I realized their opinions don’t matter and that my art was never meant for them anyway. It is all for me in the end. Everybody else has their Netflix to get to anyway
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Post pigeon story. Tell us more about the business.
Right now I mainly sell stickers and shirts of my artwork right off my site. I make cool twists on pop culture as well trippy doodles that I think are fun.
I’m just proud in the simple fact that I’ve made more than $5 off this site and I get to send my artwork to people I’ve never met before. I’m still in the process of expanding my store, but everyone who orders still gets a hand-drawn doodle from me to thank them.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’ll probably be inching towards more video content this coming year, as well as putting my art into galleries although I don’t like being in them too much. My main ambition is to start a magazine of my work and my other friends. Just for the fun of it.
