Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Valet.
Marvin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started almost by an accident. I always wanted to be something not knowing exactly what. My friends in the other hand always believed I would be an artist. I got in choir, got guitar classes, dance classes while being in middle school but didn’t stick to it for so long. Fast forward to high school The culture made so the dances that was trending at the times I was on it, that’s kinda what brought me back into dancing. And then with roasting at the launch table came the freestyles and soon I would be writing lines on my phone because I had to come back at someone who roasted me over a beat. It just happened that one of those times I felt the beat so much that I had to go and record it. That’s how I started going to the studio, at least by myself. I never really released it was more of a fun time with me and my friends but I told myself that if I wanted to be a real artist into this thing, I had to be a positive impact into my community. Violence is not really unknown into the black community and it would sadden me seeing some of my friends get hurt or idolizing a certain lifestyle because the guys we looked up to were living it, the music we listened to was promoting it.
At the time, I just had a sister and she was already mimicking me dancing and singing all the time so I just knew that I had to be the best thing I could ever be to her. I told myself that I had to be able to both sing and rap to a certain level because that was it, artists nowadays are doing both so the bar is a little bit higher. And so then I spent every single day practicing my singing, my writing, and everything about me that would make me a great artist to my eyes. Started as a rapper singing overthrew rapping I never worked so hard on something by myself mostly because I couldn’t afford singing lessons at the time. My parents didn’t really supported me at the time like around 14-15, didn’t have my first job yet but I was a natural hustler so I always found a way. Every photoshoot until this day actually, every studio session, every beat was off my pocket, the hardest was literally knowing nobody in the business so literally having some grown people just eating off my money. But over time I’ve found my track, my way, my vibe, and when I finally dropped my first song under the name “Marvin Valet” well it was a disappointment for everybody who thought I would be rapping but it was the start of who I really was and who I wanted to be. And after that, it’s always about understanding more who you are and what you wanna be to the world. And don’t despair because you don’t know what’s gonna happen in a week, in a day, my life changed for the better and I’m proud of that.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest thing was about learning everything by myself because nobody around me was doing this and/or trynna go the direction I was trying to go. Feeling the lack of support from my peers also was a big deal because it makes you feel even more alone and then once you’ve reached a certain point the feeling that “normal” people don’t really relate to what you’re going through. There’s a lot that goes into the mental to because your music and everything you do is impacted by your mental state and you never know how bad it is until you’ve gotten in a better place.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I dance, sing, heavy on songwriting, it’s a therapy that turned into a passion, I also skate a little bit. Mostly all things that I was already doing as a kid but decided to take seriously. I proud myself into standing out from other artists and not be your typical singer, rapper. Every time someone hears my music they’re always like “I wasn’t expecting that” and it’s a good thing because the music is mad good. I also design my own clothing, it’s more than merch, it’s literally a line of clothing. I feel proud in being diverse.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Probably getting verified, or getting followed by some of my idols or getting in touch with celebrities I’ve grew up watching. Like I never thought that I would watch these movies and later be able to talk to these actors, or hear some music on the radio and end up talking to these artists. Or seeing a movie or a series you like and being able to shoot a text directly to the actors and tell them how much you appreciated their work, it’s pretty cool.
