Meet Martha Chavez of La Moderna Bakery in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Chavez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My late husband and I opened the bakery in 1977. I couldn’t have done it without the help of all my children and grandchildren, whom have all worked at the bakery at one time or another. My son, William, has taken over as the owner and now his children help him. I can only hope the next generations continue to keep the bakery open.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have had our ups and downs, just like any other business. In the beginning, I remember having to give away food, just to get people to try it. This seemed to work like a charm because, sure enough, they would return demanding more!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the La Moderna Bakery story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a small Mexican bakery. We sell Mexican pan dulce, tamales, carnitas, chicharrones, and Menudo. Our food is made fresh daily. We use only top quality ingredients. We sell comfort food. Our food will remind you of your grandmother’s cooking. Our food leaves a lasting impression that makes you wanting more.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Many people think we have become successful because of good luck. The reason why we are successful is because we are a hard-working family and we are dedicated to our business.

Pricing:

  • Tamales $20 per dozen
  • Carnitas $10 per pound
  • Menudo $6 per quart
