Today we’d like to introduce you to Mar’Tee Briann White.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mar’Tee Briann. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a freelance wardrobe stylist, creative consultant, and personal shopper. Before I got my start in fashion, I worked in public relations, music distribution and reality TV. It occurred to me that despite trying multiple career paths after college, I wasn’t fulfilled in my career. It was at that point that I started taking small-time styling jobs on the side while working full time in an office. This wasn’t practical for the long-term so once I began assisting other stylists in the industry and felt that I had gained some momentum, I took the leap of faith and began my journey as a freelance stylist.
Assisting established stylists and having mentors in the industry was really the key for me to get adequate experience, make contacts, and gain the confidence I needed to take on my own clients in a field that requires a lot of very specific skills! To this day, I still really love working with some of those mentors, who I now call friends, and have so much gratitude and respect for them.
In my industry, everything is word of mouth! So once I started taking on jobs of my own, I began building a network of contacts and clients that lead me to where I am today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest part about becoming a freelance stylist (or freelance anything) was not always having stable or reliable income week to week. There were often times where I wouldn’t have a job for a month and it took a long time for me to learn how to navigate that challenge with my boyfriend at the time (now husband). It caused a lot of anxiety for me but I would just try to remind myself that there was an abundance of opportunity in the universe and as long as I trusted that, opportunities would come.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mar’Tee Briann Style – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
These days I predominately work with brands on marketing campaigns and I personal style and shop for celebrity clients as well as everyday professionals. I also work on a few TV shows throughout the year which is always a nice change of pace and super fun to catch up with friends and colleagues in production.
I specialize in making style relatable, approachable, and accessible. I don’t believe in sacrificing quality nor do I believe in splurging on everything you own. I’ve curated a personal fashion sense and a lifestyle for myself on a balanced budget- spending more on items that warrant an investment and saving on items that are still of quality but don’t require a strain on my bank account. I bring that same personal philosophy to my work and my clients.
I also pride myself on not pushing my own style agenda on clients. With personal styling, I’m able to curate looks that elevate their personal style while still allowing the client to feel true to themselves. When working on marketing campaigns, I make sure that my execution of the project is in line with the overall branding strategy while still bringing my fashion-forward vision to the table.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My newest and most profound journey has been becoming a wife and a mother. I recently married my partner of 8 years and we are expecting our first child at the end of August! I’ve felt such a major shift in my priorities and my purpose and it has been such a beautiful personal growth process.
Fashion and lifestyle curation are such a part of who I am and I know that I will continue to immerse myself in all things style but I look forward to see how my professional career path adapts and evolves as I enter into motherhood.
