Meet Mark Uehlein of Mark Uehlein Photography in Whittier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Uehlein.

Mark, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got married on May 22’ 2011, to celebrate we went up to San Francisco for a mini honeymoon. We went to the top of the De young museum and I had a wonderful view of the city so I decided to take a picture of the city with my digital point and shoot camera and it was horrible. That moment I knew I never wanted to settle for a bad photo ever again. I said I am going to get a new camera. Now I wanted to learn how to use it which lead to me obsessing over it and which lead me to taking a no credit community education beginning photography class with Larry Jones who turned out to be the chair of SMC photography department.

Rachael and I were about to start a family and she encouraged me to pursue something I loved. I enrolled in the photography program at Santa Monica College and that’s where I learned the technical skills to accompany my passion for photography.

It has been an interesting and at times challenging journey but it was a great decision and I’m so grateful for where I am now.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a challenge raising a family (we have two boys now), taking evening classes, establishing a business, and of course shooting, but my wife has been incredibly supportive and without her none of this would have been possible.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mark Uehlein Photography – what should we know?
I’m a photographer that specializes in weddings, engagements, newborn and family photography. Getting married and becoming a stay at home father was what really inspired me. I got to photograph all his baby milestones, crawling, funny faces with his lips, eating, learning how to walk. That’s when I realized how precious these moments are and why it’s so important to capture them.

I’m most proud of the positive feedback I receive from clients. I believe in marketing, especially on social media, but nothing beats word of mouth and referrals.

I feel my hard work, preparation and attention to detail. I spend lots of time talking to clients to learn what they want and help them develop those ideas, along with suggestions for how we can go above and beyond.

I always deliver what they want and much more, and typically it’s those unexpected shots that really exceed their expectations.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Always pushing myself to try new ideas, willing to experiment and take a chance.
