Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Hengel.
Hi Mark, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The two biggest influences who shaped me to the man I am today are my mother and father. My dad was a strong willed small business owner who did everything in his power to provide for our family. On the other hand, my mom was a music therapist in public schools, using the power of music to teach students who needed special education. Growing up, she gave private lessons from our living room (dubbed the music room) – I’ll never forget the countless Saturday mornings being woken up by some new student plunking piano keys to form the loose melody of “Old McDonald Had A Farm”. She taught me numerous instruments and from age 10 I became active in any music scene I could find.
My dad gave me the entrepreneurial drive to really work toward my goals where my mother gave me a creative spirit that allows me to enjoy life to the fullest.
When I went off to college in Milwaukee, I decided to pursue a career that combined creativity and business: Marketing. Ultimately, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Marketing and Operations Supply Chain Management, and a minor in music.
I spent a few years there working for a startup company and playing in a country rock band before making the leap out to California but now here I am! A few years in and I’m grateful every day I get to live here.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hahaha, I don’t think anyone I know has had a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was learning to reverse with a UHaul when I drove across the country! Just kidding… but it is more difficult than someone might think.
But really, the biggest challenge I’ve faced and continue to face is being resilient in the midst of multiple challenges. Continuing on when everything seems to be against you is extremely difficult. I try to remember that each setback is just a bump in the road and then focus my sights on the bigger picture.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Canyon Country Consulting?
I run a marketing company based in Hollywood called Canyon Country Consulting. Our team helps bring affordable marketing solutions to small to medium size business in the Los Angeles area (save a few exceptions). Since I am an entertainer myself, I specialize in working with businesses and personalities in the entertainment industry. I’ve worked with art galleries, musicians, authors, tour companies, and music studios. I think my music background gives me a unique perspective that cookie cutter marketing companies lack – especially when it comes to marketing entertainment.
As a musician, I perform at venues all around the LA area. My first single is being released next month (November ’25) and my debut record comes out in January ’26. It’s a western country rock concept album based on an outlaw traveling from town to town. I am extremely grateful to everyone who has helped me put this record together and I can’t wait to share it with the world. To keep up with my musical journey, head to my Instagram music.scraps.
What matters most to you? Why?
The connections I make with people around me matter more to me than anything. They make life worth living.
I enjoy things like hiking, camping, going to the beach, collecting vinyl, thrift shopping, listening to or playing music… but all of that is made better when I’m with the people I love.
