Meet Marissa Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Torres.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
At a young age, I wore makeup for dance competitions but never was really interested in doing my own or others until I broke my nose. I wouldn’t attend school because, I was terrified of what people would think. I thought I looked like Shrek with two black eyes. haha So after a week of not attending school, my mom took me to a mac counter, where I soon became addicted in the application and everything about it. After that, I was hooked always researching the new looks and doing my friends makeup as well as having them do my makeup.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a freelance makeup artist in the Inland Empire and certified in Beauty, Corrective, Airbrush, and some creepy Special Fx makeup application. I have also expanded into Microblading brows in the Orange County area.

I enjoy making people feel like their most beautiful selves on the most important days of their lives. It’s a way to connect with new people, spreads joy, and embraces the beauty you were already born with.

My advice to all the inspiring artist out there that we all have our moments of feeling discourage or not being recognized from the get go…to not give up. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Do not confuse popularity with experience. Put in the work and surround yourself with people/family who constantly push you to do better. I love to live my life with the PMA mentality because one negative thought can drain you.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I think with any independent work, we all struggle with the challenges of the consistency of work. Not knowing when you will find work next is extremely scary when you’re trying to pay your bills and food. That fear of the unknown can hinder you from doing what you want or what you’re really good at. I think that’s why some go back to the 8-5 they hated. You have to do whatever it takes, sometimes, that’s long hours and multiple jobs. I’ve learned that over the long run.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work as has been published in a couple magazines such as Gilded, Xpressions, Elegant, Shuba magazine to name a few. But the best way would be through Instagram or even my website. I would say people can support my work by telling a friend or following some sort of social media. Even booking an appointment.
