Meet Mariangela Quiroga Cantillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariangela Quiroga Cantillo.

Mariangela Quiroga Cantillo

Hi Mariangela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Before diving into photography, I pursued a BFA in Classical Piano Performance and joined the Colombian Youth Philharmonic. It was during our tours that I discovered my passion for capturing different moments and people through the lens. After a couple of years, I decided to shift my career path and moved from Colombia to the US to pursue an MFA in Still Photography.

The MFA program was exceptional, starting in New York City and concluding in Los Angeles. Living in these two iconic cities has been a transformative experience, rich with opportunities and inspiration. I’ve cherished sharing my art and collaborating with incredible industry professionals, learning and growing with each project.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I absolutely love photography; it constantly connects me with creative individuals, provides a window into people’s lives, and allows me to tell their stories in the best light. Photography, as an art form, offers so many opportunities worldwide, which have allowed me to travel, broaden my horizons, and see different cultures.

Talking about the journey, well, it has been interesting! A career in the arts, especially photography, comes with many highs and lows, and it is worth it thanks to the support of peers, friends, and family, maintaining a positive perspective on life’s events, and really believing in yourself and your art.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Photographer & DigiTech specializing in Editorial and Commercial photography, renowned for my work with musicians, portraiture, and, more recently, still life. I have collaborated with top production companies and well-known brands; I also believe my music background enhances my sensitivity in photography, enabling me to listen to and visually tell my subjects’ stories through light and composition.

I love to spend my time engaging in ventures that benefit the community. Last year, Lina Sanchez (post-producer) and I launched a “The 2 Amigas in Hollywood Podcast”, a space in which we explore vital roles in Hollywood, showcasing the integral contributions of these professionals to the entertainment industry.

I am also proud to be part of two remarkable organizations: the YEP Committee from the Hollywood Professional Association, where we mentor talented entertainment professionals, and the Board of Somos CaPAZes, an organization which focuses on education for peace in Colombia.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
This is a great and essential question for anyone pursuing a career in the arts! In fact, Ep. 7 of our podcast “The 2 Amigas in Hollywood” delves deeply into this topic.

This industry revolves around people, stories, and connections. I highly encourage people to ask questions and reach out to people/peers/mentors you really want to connect. I am a bit shy at first, so I understand that this is not easy, but it is very necessary to advance in life and in your career. Another tip is to be mindful of how you communicate and respect others’ time. Being nice and professional will encourage people to hire, recommend, and collaborate with you; you never know where your next successful project might come from! My last tip is to nurture mentor relationships and remember that it’s a reciprocal relationship. Support and take care of your mentor as well as they support you.
