Meet Maria McCarthy of Maria McCarthy Photography in Westlake Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria McCarthy.

Maria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always loved photography, and was my family photographer at a very young age. I took classes in high school, and went to college for photography. Out of college I worked for a wedding & portrait studio in Old Greenwich CT, where I learned classic portraiture and lighting.

I moved to CA in 1990 to start my own photography business. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years, photographing on TV & movie sets, and photographing celebrity events and movie premiers.

Currently, I specialize in Bar/Bat Mitzvah’s and portraiture.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Major changes took place in the industry when digital cameras came out.

Also, trends change you have to keep informed so your work stays fresh.

I photograph Bar/Bat Mitzvah’s, weddings, and any other type of event.

Portrait work… from a business portrait session to a family lifestyle session on the beach.

I’m known for my unobtrusiveness, attention to detail, willingness to put in 110% for my clients.

I become best friends with my clients, capture timeless moments and the love between families.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a great place to start a photography business, there are so many opportunities, and various needs for photography.

Advice for a beginner, figure out what your passion is (people, product, interiors, etc) and find a professional to apprentice with. Learning with a professional is invaluable.
