Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Alejandra Hernandez.
Hi Maria Alejandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Ecuador. I was always in love with the art of Acting and Directing for theatre and film. Years later, I am grateful to God to be able to be in this country where I got to study my passion for Acting and more. Now with the help of my husband we love to create films together in our production company GCM Productions, that we hope we can continue to grow, and as an Actress I continue following my dreams, working hard, auditioning, creating and never losing hope and faith. I have had the opportunity to be in a couple of commercials now and also with the company of my husband and that has been such a blessing! And We also acted together in a short film that I directed, wrote and we produced. I continue to create and hopefully, soon I will be able to direct my first feature. In my twenties, I was in an out of hospitals when I got diagnosed with Lupus. I had to stop it all. But I am happy and grateful to God for being back and with a different mindset. I am just happy to be alive and to have a circle that supports me and pushes me to not give up. Now I am also an ambassador for the Lupus Foundation. I just love to see these amazing warriors not giving up. And yes, I AM MORE THAN LUPUS. I can’t believe that for a moment in my life I thought of leaving it all behind. Now, I use this diagnosis as a weapon to keep going.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road! But I feel like I would not have it any other way. I did not expect the Lupus diagnosis and how it affected my body, mind, soul … everything. It affected my relationships, friendships, work, family, marriage, etc… But thank God, Here I am. Lupus was just a part of a struggle, life can be hard and many factors are impediments for us to continue believing and going. But it is a miracle when we can see the world and the circumstances in a different light. I decided to see difficulties as opportunities for miracles, for change. I am grateful for my husband for pushing me to believe even when I didn’t want to. Struggles bring us wisdom and opportunities to change.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an actress/director and Lupus advocate, but most importantly, I am human. I specialize in productions and I am proud of my husband and I for creating our production company GCM Productions. Another thing that makes me happy is that we both actively acting now.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I would love to produce my first feature film and continue writing and producing short films. In acting, I would love to have the opportunity to work with so many amazing directors and productions out there!
